Can’t help with Salem much, but if you’re looking specifically for italian restaurants in the North End go to Giacomos and Mamma Maria.
Giacomos doesn’t take reservations so you’ll have to stand in line, but it’s worth it.
Neptune Oyster House for seafood.
Skip Mikes Pastry’s and Modern, go to Boba if you want a cannoli.

Random rec:
Nightshade Noodle Bar
It's in Lynn, which borders Salem. Downtown Lynn is meh at best, but it's worth it.

Saltie Girl, best lobster roll and chowder by far.

Mamma Maria is definitely worth the trip.
Wracking my brain now for a great seafood restaurant we visited years ago. Just coming up empty. I’ll edit if I figure it out.
For steak, I really enjoyed Boston Chops.
Also, it is always a great idea to grab lunch at Eataly. Never disappointed.

North end Italian joints galore. We enjoyed Tresca And if you have time go across street to Improv Asylum. Good time.

We did Mama Maria this summer. It was really great. We were able to get a table on short notice. Saltie Girl was top notch too but required a reservation a few weeks out.

Toro in South End, Flour is right across the street. Right on the silver line.

Used to be one of my favorite spots. Went a while back and was incredibly underwhelmed. I may go back and try it again, I could have caught them on an off night.
But I walked away thinking “I can’t believe I just paid $200 for that”

Regina Pizzeria is damn near my favorite on the planet. North End.

Row 34 was very good when I visited in August.

Saltie Girl is absolutely NOT the place to get a lobster roll in Boston. Saltie Girl is where you go to schmooze for hours over seafood towers and caviar and other more interesting and fancy foods of that nature.
Best lobster rolls are at belle isle, if you're into that.
I thought Bar Volpe was very good. Celeste was also very good.

North End for Italian restaurants and Pizza. Don't think you can go wrong at any of them.
Best bowl of Chowder I had was from Bell in the Hand Tavern right off of the Freedom Trail in Downtown Boston. It was touristy, but that bowl was awesome.

I had a $45 lobster roll from there last week (the hot butter one). It was incredible. Good cocktail too.

Respectfully, no. OP don’t go to that tourist trap. It’s the margaritaville of Boston.

I’m seeing lots of recommendations for the north side… what about the south side, near Boston University?
We are going to visit my BIL this weekend and he lives near campus. Looking for a mom and pop Italian place and some dive bars, probably Irish pubs.
Thanks in advance!
