Sometimes it’s the teacher’s fault and sometimes it’s because the kid is a crack baby. So increased property taxes (or some other tax eventually) to pay for the teachers’ pay those additional 30 hours only to have the student back at square one when August rolls around. At some point the education system needs to admit that we just have a lot of stupid people in Louisiana.
What really needs to happen is the state needs to make it a lot easier to fire ineffective teachers. My wife teaches teachers and is accountable for their performance. She tells me every day about how so many teachers just don’t give a shite about following standards and cut corners every day but it’s so hard to fire them so the schools are stuck with them until they essentially get fed up with corrective action enough to finally just quit. THAT’S the problem. We make it very difficult to fire a teacher in this state.

Yeah it's hard to feel sorry when teachers whine about pay when you see the product they're putting out. My kid's AP Biology 2 teacher literally doesn't do anything. The kids do hours of homework a night for them to just go over it in class together while she sits there. When asked about clarity on something she LITERALLY said, "I don't know. Google it". My kids are juniors and do not go to bed before 1am due to massive amounts of homework. They're teaching themselves outside of 1-2 classes.

I agree there are teachers that don't give a rip, but who exactly are we going to replace these teachers with? I don't think there are tons of qualified teachers lining up to teach in this environment.
That leads me to my next point, and I think we can all agree that the government needs to get out of the way. All the federal and state regulations cause all the school districts to hire a bunch of compliance and administrative positions that have no direct effect on actually educating kids. Part of that regulation is not letting schools expel kids and send them to the alternative school. Also it seems like nearly half of kids have some sort of IEP that requires teachers to make individual tests for nearly every IEP kid.
These are part of the "standards" the federal/state governments are mandating that teachers hate.

We have " stupid" people in Louisiana because the politicians, both Democrat and Republican, have a vested interest in keeping people under educated and under employed. Republicans have had de facto control of the state since 1996 and overall few things have changed in the employment picture.
Definitely very little change in the educational landscape.
Both parties are equally worthless. Should I invite one group of politicians to a barbecue to watch me roast the other side, or should they both be on the menu?

Taking into account all the other shite the dumb asses in this state do regularly, this is the only correct answer. There IS no solution, the dumb ones can’t be educated.

Stupid, irresponsible parents. When five year olds show up to kindergarten still shitting their pants with no concept of what a number, letter, or even a color is, it’s tough. Once again, no parental accountability, just blame it all on the public school system.
To the point, our school had open house earlier this week. With the exception of one (in an entire grade level) the only parents who showed up were the parents of the “A” students. Possible correlation? I think so.

quote:About 90% of the time, it's because their parents are too lazy to sit down with them for 20 minutes a day. There's bad teachers, sure, but it's kind of overblown by most of the posters on here. Most teachers aren't like those SJW types you saw on an episode of Tucker or some Turning Points USA video you saw.

quote:. I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I taught in Louisiana for 8 years, and I was union. I could’ve been let go for any reason at anytime. If it’s “hard” to fire teachers, it’s because there is a massive teacher shortage. The literacy problem is due to the fact that standards have been lowered for a couple of generations now. It’ll take 20 years to unfrick.
