Ed O'Neill: Chris Farley's motivational speaker was really a Woody Hayes impression

Ed O'Neil Chris Farley stories
Ed O'Neil told a story this week that I had never heard before, even as an avid Farley/90s SNL fan.
Apparently O'Neil, a former 0hio U football player from Youngstown, knew Farley well and saw him at a party once after the sketch was huge hit on SNL, and he told him: "I know who you're doing in that bit."
Farley apparently looked at him and said, "What do you mean?" and Ed said, "You're just doing Woody Hayes, aren't you?"
Farley, a Wisconsin native who loved football, just shook his head in amazement and said "you sonnovabitch", and apparently never let on to anyone else that the Matt Foley character, although named after his childhood friend and written by Bob Odenkirk for Farley, was, at its core, just a Farley-esque Woody Hayes.
Looking at this video, it's now clearly apparent where he got the whole vibe and voice of the character.
Woody Hayes on Apathy
It's actually an incredible impression now that you know.
Ed also told a story about Farley putting Jon Lovitz cat in a sandwich and trying to eat it. It's glorious.

That was a great speech by Hayes.
Farley definitely crushed the role of Foley.

Woody was a GREAT American.
I never met anyone who played for him who felt they were not better off as a person for playing for him .
Woody was a pretty smart guy as well.

My dad grew up in NE Ohio and is about O'Neill's age, so I sent him this thread. Called me right away laughing, "Woody Hayes? That's a great story!".

Went on a wiki deep dive on Hayes. He sure did love attacking journalists. Attacking that player was a step too far. In wiki fashion I went of track after reading his comments on My Lai and spent about 30 minutes reading my Lai masacare stuff.

Bob Odenkirk is supremely talented

I remember in an interview Farley claimed that the character was inspired by a football coach he had in highschool.

That's a good video.
Best way to remember Woody is with stuff like this.
Need more motivators and leaders like this.
