Really interesting article.
quote:
Mathieu is here. Is back. In every possible sense, after signing with the Saints. Back training like before the LSU superstar days, basic and brutal and intentionally Rocky-esque. Back motivated, even more than normal. And back, well, home, which might sound perfect but isn’t. Not exactly.
quote:
He loves New Orleans, loves the people, culture and vibe. The locals love him back. They crashed a website that sells custom Saints jerseys, swarmed him in public and urged him to run for mayor or city council. But there’s a part of him that’s wary, too. Or vigilant, at least. His best friend, Terry Lucas, likes to consider them both survivors. They spent their teens surrounded by poverty, gun violence, hurricanes, drug use, gangs, destruction, self-destruction, abandonment and death—they’re fortified and armored. They’re also guarded.
Really interesting article.

Sensationalist bs. Not how they grew up, but as if that shite can touch them now unless they intentionally go back in the streets.

Bro is absolutely a role model and is a good representation of why sports can have a bigger impact than simply entertainment. He overcame countless setbacks and rejected the toxic environment that was trying to reclaim his life.
Can’t wait for the future documentary on him. Hope his impact continues to be felt beyond the field. If he doesn’t give up on New Orleans like he didn’t give up on himself, maybe some positive progress can be made.

He will be a coach at LSU when he hangs it up, I really think he will retire when his saints contract is over to be a coach on BK staff. Great role model and great story and great Louisianaian

How many athletes careers are short circuited because the get wrapped back up with old buddies from back in their thug days? Lots. It shows great maturity when people guard themselves against being drawn back in. Those early connections in our lives can be very powerful, even the dangerous ones.

NOLA is the best worst girlfriend you’ve ever had. You know you shouldn’t call her, but you inevitably do, and you have an amazing time until the wheels come off and she’s back to being horrible for you.
You distance yourself. You keep space between you two. Then, one night, you fricking call again. She’s the best worst girlfriend you’ve ever had.
