You have a really weird definition of can’t miss, home run hires.

Mark richt got fired from Georgia for not being good enough. How was he can’t miss for Miami?

Media loved the hire as they're perpetually desperate for ND to be great again.

Belichick aura

Decided schematic advantage

Tom Herman at Texas would be a better example than the ones that you provided.

Willingham-ND

I seem to recall that move being hyped but it's been a while.

I think people expected really good things out of Rich Rod at Michigan, Frost at Nebraska, Tom Herman at Texas, and Shaka Smart at Texas.

Gillespie was such a shite show at Kentucky that people forget he had a really good resume up to that point.

He was the 2nd or 3rd fallback after ND struck out on getting Urban from Utah

This.

Herman and Frost were the epitome of “can’t miss” home run hires from the G5 ranks because both had won at a G5 program and both had been OCs at high level P5 programs (OSU and Oregon).

Herman’s Texas years weren’t that bad, whereas Frost was an abject, historic failure at Nebraska.

what he did at A&M was/is amazing

to say the basketball program was a nuclear wasteland with the earth salted when he arrived would be an understatement. but he did such a good job that the program kept making tournaments even after he left

terrific coach. just had his own personal shite which led to his collapse at a program like kentucky

Tom Herman’s career has a crazy arc.

Goes from hyped genius OC to having a huge season at UH.

Despite a good but disappointing (some bad upset losses) follow up season he gets a bidding war between UT and LSU

Gets a massive amount of hype to start and has decent success-ranked in post season polls in all but opening season bowls every year. Somehow the worm turned and he became an embarrassing meme after the sugar bowl year and went 7–3 in a big 12 only season with one loss in 4 OT and the other two by a combined 5 points.

It wasn’t playoff berths but was solid. They abruptly fire him for a former drunk who has been one of the most overrated names coaching at two premier history programs in the pac 10 and never had less than 4 losses and he goes 5-7 in year 1.

Meanwhile Tom Herman has been relegated to broadcasting
