I have a manual reel mower and honestly it’s been shelved from June until now due to the drought in north Texas. That being said there is a guy in my neighborhood that has a swardman and it is a thing of beauty. The cut that that lawnmower gives is like individually cutting the grass blades with scissors.

How big is your property? What HOC are you looking to maintain?

I have 20 acres but I only want to maintain my front yard and a putting green that's really just for looks. About 3/4 of an acre total. About 1/2 inch height

I would look for a retired John Deere greens mower.

When I had a paspalum yard I used a Tru-Cut. Great mower. Really heavy duty.

Swardmans are nice. The reel is modular and they have scarifier and power rake attachments.

I started with a California. Worked great then was able to find a John Deere 220b. Much better cut. The California I don’t think cuts low enough for putting green. You’ll need to go 3/16” for putting green. The problem is going be, going from the yard to the putting green. There is no quick heigh adjustment. At least not on mine. I would think in theory you could measure the height of yard and see how many turns to get to the height of putting green. Not sure if that’s doable. But be ready at peak cutting to cut both yard and green 3 times a week. I’m just thinking in my head how much work 3/4 of an acre would be. Not impossible but a lot of work.

I have had a Swardman for the last 2 summers and have been pretty happy with it. I had a John Deere before which was also nice. Benefit of the Swardman is that it is easier to work on yourself without having a ton of equipment or having to find someone local to sharpen the blades. The reel comes off and you can ship it back to them, they sharpen it and send it back. Also easy to get replacement parts/belts if needed and again you don't need to be a trained mechanic to fix them.
