Anyone have recommendations on where to get a good one around BR? Never tried one but I’ve gotten a weird itch to make one. Planned on using smoked pork belly, but thought hands on research would be best.

I really like the sausage banh mi from Bao. I like plenty from the Little Vietnam area on Florida but Bao is more convenient and 1000 times cleaner...especially Dangs. But Dangs is dang good.

So good. And they might have the best eggrolls I've ever had.

I use pork butt to make it at home. Marinate, grill and assemble the sandwich

I would go this route. The banh mi in BR is pretty meh. The problem with them is that the bread is not that good. Secondly, they don't put any sauce in the banh mi.

Dong Phuong(1 hr drive)has good banh mi. Good variety that restaurants in BR don't offer (ground pork, fish patty, Chinese sausage) and they make their own bread(good but not great).

If you're going to make your own, you I would use the baguette from Whole Foods. You're set with the pork belly(hopefully with some juices). All you need left is pickled carrots and egg mayo which are both sold at the asian market, sliced cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, ground black pepper, siracha(I prefer chin su), spread some pate is you into that. Add a sunny side egg if you want a deluxe. Done

Most of the places get their bread from Dong Phuong.

Dangs is my favorite Vietnamese in town, but my favorite banh mi is the Nem Nuong (sausage) at Bao.

1.Grilled Pork

2.Nem Nuong (sausage)

Preferably eat it there when the bread is just heated.

Tell us more about sauce on a traditional banh mi.

I’ll plug Cafe Mimi downtown. Really solid bahn mi and even better vermicelli bowl. Super friendly people as well.

A good banh mi should always always some kind of sauce that spooned and poured across the banh mi. The only exception would be the cold cuts (cha Lua) banh mi which has soy sauce. It can be the juice form the cooked meat(meatballs, minced pork) or a separte sauce or both.

I see from the downvotes that people got bent out of shape from my earlier comment. I don't know much about Italian food or BBQ. But I do know Vietnamese food. And people who say Bao has a good banh mi is doing a disservice to others who are looking for advice. It's an average banh mi. You will not see a Vietnamese person eating it. It's like saying piccadilly has the best gumbo. I wold go with Dang's in BR if I had to choose.

Weird. A Vietnamese foodie friend introduced me to it. I saw him eat it.
