Pelicans 2nd round pick Karlo Matkovic dropped 17 & 10 in a big Croatia win. He started over Ivica Zubac in the win over Switzerland in the FIBA EuroBasket Qualifier.

If this guy is as good as we think, you are looking at JV's replacement in 2 years.

Wow. I know that FIBA is a bit of a different game than the NBA, but starting over Zubac is a big deal.

I don't know about "eventual JV replacement", but I will be quite happy with "quality backup on a minimum salary."

JV is wildly underrated imo. Sure he has some bad games but the dude can ball.

JV is very good. Eventually though, there is going to come a numbers crunch, and you'll need to save money somewhere. Center is usually the easiest spot to do that.

Thanks for the update. I thought Matkovic was impressive in his brief time in the summer league. I think he could be a nice complimentary role player in the NBA.

Karlo is a freak athlete that never shot 3s in international play, but then his twitter workouts make him look like Klay Thompson from 3

His theoretical skill set overlaps with Jaxson's. Hopefully he's a better rebounder and can give us the athletic backup center we've been looking for.

Zubac is a good player.

Matkovic just seems like a good player who will make an nba tea .

Hard to find highlights, but here's a link to a full game (Croatia vs Switzerland) from August 28: LINK Karlo started the game and logged a lot of minutes. You can just skip the video when he is not on the court. He's a solid rookie center. Good rebounding at both ends, good shot blocking, good passing, good free throw shooting, good at drawing fouls, thunderous slams, very athletic and decent defense. I can definitely see him as JV's replacement in the future and as a good backup center in the meantime. He's even wearing #17 on his Croatian jersey!

I hope Green will play him.
The reality is : Many young players have interesting minutes in Europe but don't play in NBA.

Usman Garuba for example is in this situation.

I saw a story says he's a stash guy. next year to USA. no idea if he's under contract for a euro team already but it "must be" possible to buy him out if he comes to practice and dominates hayes. starting over zubac is interesting. the former yugoslav countries seem to approach hoops like USA high schools cross town rivalry. identity politics serious.
I would love to see him come to preseason. he'll be in peak shape if he comes to practice.
