I discovered pipe smoke tonight

My neighbor across the street had about 25 pipes that were his grandfather’s. He asked me if there was any value in them, and I discovered a few nice handmade Italian, Irish, and England made pipes that he had.
He wants me to sell them for him, but he kept a couple and told me to keep one. He came over this evening with a “London blend” (if I remember correctly), and that shite was awesome. I’ve never smoked a pipe before. It made the Eagle Rare we were drinking taste even better.
Any recs on a blend (that I can still pass a piss test), to try next?

Got a Mini-Bent and a Dryfilter both say imported from Briar, Italy in front of me right now. They were my grandpas and I used to love the smell.
Have a tin of Peterson Connoisseur’s
Choice but it’s not really my thing.

I have a friend that is incredibly knowledgeable in the area of pipes. He buys and sells tons of them. His knowledge is extensive. If you are not sure what you hit he could tell you.

No, but your mom does. She doesn’t tickle my balls or anything. She does this weird thing with her mouth (you know what I’m talking about), where she sucks the head of my dick and licks my balls at the same time. It’s amazing. She must have had years of practice.

Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding. By far one of the best pipe blends you’ll find. I’m more of a cigar guy, but late fall, out in the mountains pipe tobacco hits the right spot.
McLelland Christmas Cheer is another favorite with the pipe crowd, though they do a one-off blend every year and your mileage can vary from there.
Look for other McClelland blends and if you like the flavored / aromatic stuff Look up Boswells. Peterson has a bunch of popular blends, Early Morning Pipe and Nightcap are popular blends, but their whole line is pretty solid.
End of the day, you’ll have to find what you like, aromatic (flavored), English blends (non-flavored) and the different tobaccos all make for very different tastes. Just have to figure out what you like
Side note; there’s actually a strain of pipe tobacco that’s only grown in Louisiana, in Saint James Parrish ; it’s called Perique. It’s grown in small numbers and extremely unique. It’s usually blended in with other stuff because it’s so strong.

I need to learn how to pack and smoke a pipe. Tonight, as I was taking a drag, I could hear a lot of air coming through the pipe (sounded like I was blowing bubbles), plus I had to re-light it several times.

Pack the pipe tobacco down until it feels like your drinking a milkshake through a straw when you take a drag.
Give it a good solid light with a soft flame lighter and take the first few puffs(not a zippo, the oils spoil tobacco. you have to use butane). After that repack the tobacco down and give it another light and you should be good to go. If it goes out on you, just relight. Pipe tobacco doesn’t go shitty like cigars do on too many re-lights.
Do it a few times and you’ll get the hang of it. Also get one of those $3 pipe tools, it’s like three tools in one. they’re helpful in packing, digging out ash breaking up clogs.

I used to have a corn cob pipe back in the day. Smoking that was an art, it takes skill to pack, tamp and keep it lit. But the smoke was always super smooth and there was tons of variety. Definitely a front porch thing. I may break my kit back out for grins.

No one mentioned why the pipe smoke made the bourbon taste amazing. I know a small bite of chocolate will make bourbon taste better, but I would have never guess smoke. I’ve never noticed it with cigars.

Oh yeah, the smoke definitely enhances the taste of bourbon. There's pairings you can look up. shite man, I'm gonna have to spark that up this weekend.

Civilizations have been smoking as early as 5000 years before Christ.
From Wikipedia:
quote:
The agricultural product is often mixed with additives[4] and then combusted. The resulting smoke is then inhaled and the active substances absorbed through the alveoli in the lungs or the oral mucosa.[5] Many substances in cigarette smoke trigger chemical reactions in nerve endings, which heighten heart rate, alertness[6] and reaction time, among other things.[7] Dopamine and endorphins are released, which are often associated with pleasure.
Only in the last 100 years, doctors found smoking to be bad for your health.
More on the history of smoking:
quote:
Smoking's history dates back to as early as 5000–3000 BC, when the agricultural product began to be cultivated in Mesoamerica and South America; consumption later evolved into burning the plant substance either by accident or with intent of exploring other means of consumption.[1] The practice worked its way into shamanistic rituals.[18] Many ancient civilizations – such as the Babylonians, the Indians, and the Chinese – burnt incense during religious rituals. Smoking in the Americas probably had its origins in the incense-burning ceremonies of shamans but was later adopted for pleasure or as a social tool.[19] The smoking of tobacco and various hallucinogenic drugs was used to achieve trances and to come into contact with the spirit world.[20] Also, to stimulate respiration, tobacco smoke enemas were used.[21] Eastern North American tribes would carry large amounts of tobacco in pouches as a readily accepted trade item and would often smoke it in ceremonial pipes, either in sacred ceremonies or to seal bargains.[22] Adults as well as children enjoyed the practice.[23] It was believed that tobacco was a gift from the Creator and that the exhaled tobacco smoke was capable of carrying one's thoughts and prayers to heaven.[24] Apart from smoking, tobacco had uses as medicine. As a pain killer it was used for earache and toothache and occasionally as a poultice. Smoking was said by the desert Indians to be a cure for colds, especially if the tobacco was mixed with the leaves of the small Desert sage, Salvia dorrii, or the root of Indian balsam or cough root, Leptotaenia multifida, the addition of which was thought to be particularly good for asthma and tuberculosis.

The Country Squire, in Jackson, Ms, has some really good blends. I’m partial to the Rivendell and Second Breakfast.
