I'm old (61), and it's really sad to see the state of the music scene today.

Can't even listen to the radio today with what they play. There are still some bands that carry the torch, but you will never hear them on the radio unless you live near a college town.

I'm so blessed to have grown up with Zeppelin, Stones, Floyd, Sabbath and so many others.

Every decade groups have come along that make me think rock is not dead, but now, unless you know someone that turns you on to their music, you won't ever hear it.

It's really a shame that youths today are growing up thinking that someone that can recite words over a loop track is an artist.

Old man rant over. Get off my fricking lawn

You look back through a filter. There was absolute terrible music in the 60's-80's.

Exactly. Every year has great songs and crap that gets played on the radio. The majority of people have crap taste in music so that's what get played on the radio. Those songs will have no staying power though.

Listen to exactly what you want on Spotify or Pandora. If you do happen upon a new artist you like, listen to their "radio station" on one of those two apps to find similar new artists.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that's precisely what he's complaining about.

I think his complaint is more general: that we no longer live in The Golden Age Of Rock & Roll -- when you could simply flip on the (transistor? car?) radio and be inundated by R&R.

Unfortunately, Golden Ages end. Opera, Ragtime, Dixieland, Big Band, Doo Wop, all had their moment in the sun, all faded into a cult taste.

I thought R&R would survive like Country, as a strong minority presence, but that doesn't seen to be happening. Hell, even Country isn't surviving like Country. We live in Rap Culture -- it swallows everything.

If that’s his gripe then, yeah, I get it. I think rock ‘n roll’s lights officially went out around 2010ish.

Depends on what you consider rock and roll. If you have a fairly broad interpretation then Big Thief, Spoon, Kevin Morby, The Sheep Dogs, Built To Spill, Angel Olsen, Fontaines D.C., Arcade Fire, The Smile, Wilco, Amyl And The Sniffers, Ty Segall all have good albums out this year already.

I am 60 and pretty much agree with you but there is a minor renaissance going on right now and the following groups give me hope:

Wet Leg
Viagra Boys
Sleaford Mods
Amyl and the Sniffers

ETA Starcrawler

Music business has changed. Seems like Regular Radio really isn’t the dominant force to listen to music

I’m sure too but I gave up on that a long time ago. There is only so many times I can hear the same ole songs by the same bands and not get a little burned out. Regular radio totally ruined Def Leopard for me.

I saw a great thread on Twitter the other day with old newspaper clippings ranging from 1906 to 2000 decrying “modern” music and how it was rubbish/dangerous/derivative.

There was new article every 5-10 years.

Agreed. I was on a long trip yesterday and on XM Prime Country they had a countdown of the top 30 country songs for this same week in 1981.

At least 25 of the songs were terrible. I thought Garth was the beginning of the end of country music, but it started way before him.

Popular culture changes. When jazz/big band music came along and classical-style music started to fade into a niche genre, I'm sure there were people who said, "Back in my day..." When rock and roll came along and jazz/big band music started to fade into a niche genre, I'm sure there were people who said, "Back in my day..." Now rock is on the downward side of its cycle too, and sure enough, there are those of us who say, "Back in my day..." I hate to see it go too, but it is the way of things. Rap/hip hop is on top now but it, too, will fade, to be replaced by whatever comes along next.

All music sucks and you end up listening to the same kind of music you liked at 14 the rest of your life

I don’t actually listen to music unless it’s a song I have to play at a show
