Deion Sanders: Pro Football Hall of Fame Is Becoming a ‘Free-for-All’

quote:
“The Hall of Fame ain’t the Hall of Fame no more,” Sanders said. “I love it. I respect it. I admire it. I think all the guys who are inducted definitely are deserving, but it needs to be a different color jacket. My jacket’s gotta be a different color.”
“There needs to be a starting 11. There needs to be an upper room. My head don’t belong with some of these other heads that’s in the Hall of Fame,” he added, referring to the Hall of Fame busts. “A lot of ya’ll Hall of Famers are thinking the same thing. This thing is becoming a free-for-all now, man.”
As for what the Hall of Fame criteria should be, Sanders explained his thought process for which players he would allow in.
“It’s people that change the game, that’s what the Hall of Fame is,” he said. “Not ‘I played good, I had a good little run, I gave you 3-4 good years.’ No, game changers.”

I personally think it's the right balance. The basketball HOF is the one where everyone gets in, and the baseball HOF is the one where the writers are petty and care more about politics than the play on the field sometimes.
In football there are still some waiting for their induction that many consider worthy but I don't think it's too exclusive either. It's a good balance

Strong words from the most overrated player in NFL history

I agree with this.

Yeah, you got another color jacket for the 100 year anniversary. You were considered one of the top 100 players in the history of the game

This year was a pretty lackluster class. Seymour's the only one that played within the last decade, said another way, all of them have been rejected a lot. If you get in 15-20 years after you first became eligible a no doubt 1st ballot guy like Deion is probably gonna think they're stretching it.

He's being disrespectful and a narcissist but he has a point.
The Hall use to be the most exclusive club...but then we get these fricking Veteran's Committees that basically elect their old buddies.
Or the elector's, media members...who are half the age of the candidates.
If your peers...the sportswriters at the time who watched you play don't believe you're worthy...
Then how can a media member 30 years later elect you after having never seen you play?

He’s not necessarily wrong….it’s just that he probably shouldn’t be the one saying it so yeah, comes off a little douche-esc

This year's class was definitely lackluster comparatively speaking, I don't know if there was anyone in there that you immediately think Hall of Famer.

For once I agree with him. The hall of fame is a jock who gets in and who will get in the future.

He should be kicked out for this abomination

Having ground rules that stipulate that 4-8 members per year must be elected is a big part of this problem. There should be no set quota. If only a couple of guys are worthy in a certain year, so be it. Having so many guys getting in every year essentially guarantees it will end up watered down.

It isn’t exclusive enough but I’m not surprised it would get watered down over time.

Can’t disagree with you there.

I have nothing against Jerry Kramer obviously but he campaigned his entire life for the Hall...
He got in at age 82, 40 years after he retired.
You know if it mean't that much to him....well good for him. Happy for his family and his legacy.
But there seems to be a little of Little League "everyone gets a trophy" creeping into the NFL HOF.
I mean 10 years...if your peers don't think you're good enough after 10 years of voting, you've outstayed your welcome..what's there to debate any longer?
Have there been people who have been overlooked, yes.
But 10 years is frankly enough on the ballot...it ensures it's the people WHO ACTUALLY WATCHED YOU PLAY voting and not some NFL Films voter who is entranced by John Facenda.

I agree with him but wonder if he should be there.

Part of the issue is that there are 22 players that start in a team and only 4-8 make it. Positions where someone could be all pro for many years, but it just isn’t a glamour position like OG or center aren’t going to make it over more noticeable positions such as QB, or CB, or RB, or edge rusher.
How can this be rectified? Do you shorten the window for eligibility but say there are no classes on class sizes, but also no floor? This way if a year has nobody eligible, you don’t have to vote them?
