Gaye seems more suited to a stand up DE in a 4 man front than a DE in a 3 man front.

What?

He’s saying that a DE in a 3-man front is traditionally a bigger DE that can eat up blocks, i.e. Rashard Lawrence. Since Gaye is a long and lean DE with speed, he’s better suited to stand up and explode off the line/rush the passer.

We’re not a traditional 3-4.

None of them are there to eat blocks.

Modern 3-4s will use one of the DEs as a traditional edge. Think Joey Bosa in San Diego. Very few teams worth a shite are running a 2-gap 3-4 anymore as a base defense. That's dino ball. Most teams are moving to the Fangio/Staley gap and a half 3-man line style.
