I really thought using reverse thrust to brake was pretty standard across the world. I've never seen an airliner land at MSY without using it.

Yes to a point. Brakes are also used to take an earlier taxiway so as to clear the runway faster. This allows closer spacing of landings. The plane behind can’t be past the go around point until the plane ahead has cleared the runway.
