Travel analysts expect the price of airline tickets to drop significantly in the coming weeks.

data from the booking app Hopper, which predicts airfare changes, suggests the average cost of domestic round-trip flights in the U.S. could fall to under $300 ($298 to be precise) by the middle of September.

Experts say prices for international flights this autumn will be about 25% lower than during the summer months, too, with the cost of many round-trip flights from the U.S. to Europe dipping below $500 again, according to ABC News.

Hope international fares for the holidays fall, because they’re very expensive now. If they don’t fall, I’ll stay home.

Here's what I think you'll see. SOME of the prices will drop on some routes but on limited options per day. The only way the airlines will be able to catch up with the demand is the increase prices on highly desired routes and times to reduce the sale and demand. They don't have the staff to operate at the level they are at and dropping process across the board won't help them. Cancellations, delays, luggage issues, etc will all get worse with lower prices not better and in my opinion, I'd pay double for a better experience that what is being offered right now across the board.
To take advantage of the lower fares you'll need to be prepared to fly during the week and on lower desired routes.

Prices are already dropping even for flights in a few weeks. Flying SEA to JFK soon and saw one-way tickets for $150.
Start looking now if you're browsing for late August-mid December flights. Weekends still look a bit more but it's much better than whatever this summer was.
If people really do start to save more $$ from the recession they'll avoid traveling, it's one of the first expenses to go unless the price is cheap. Since the airlines want full planes, I don't see them getting away with $600-$1000 tickets for much longer. Doubt we'll go back to $49 fares, but maybe?
You may need to book one-way tickets on different airlines but theres nothing wrong with that as long as the price and flight times work for you. Plus, there's a high chance of a schedule change so you can change for free

Need to start looking for flights from Boston to Dublin in early November so hope this trend continues.

Check Aer Lingus. I just got about an email about a sale on flights from the east coast. I deleted it, but they tend to run sales pretty frequently. This is about the right time frame for a sale for November.

Definitely haven't seen any drops yet. The flights I've been watching to Quito for November have gone up significantly the past couple weeks.

I can say flights to Aruba in October are higher than I've seen them in at least the last 6 years. Normally around $700 and pushing $1,200 and more now.
