We used to start mid August - around the 20th or so - and get out May 31st or so.
My kids start this Friday and will be out of school before Memorial Day.
They also get additional time off that we never got. They get a fall break, two days off for MLK, a week off for Mardi Gras PLUS 4 days off for Spring Break / Easter, etc.

When I was in 8th grade we started the day after Labor Day. The next year we started the week before Labor Day. It stayed that way throughout. But, other than Senior year we had our last day on Memorial Day.
