Jaco is more of a party town, dont expect the beach to be nice. Water is fine but beach is brown and again the town is more for a party. I enjoy Costa Rica but the beaches arent drop dead amazing, keep that in mind. Do you have a car? I was there last week and went to Manuel Antonio, beautiful area. Im sure you can find plenty of hikes and adventure stuff nearby. Also easy to find LSU people, we live in Texas and met many Texas folks and a few LSU folks.

I stayed at Los Sueños las year for a couple of days. I liked Los Sueños for sure, but Playa Herradura is a rather muddy beach. If you are expecting white sand, you will be disappointed. The good news is that the big island in the bay restricts the waves, so Playa Herradura is great for swimming and other water activities.

And the view is beautiful.

But, yeah, the national parks are your ticket for activities. Jaco is about surfing, but it's also the prostitution capital of Costa Rica.

The cocal casino has a sweet bar and women of ill repute. If you’re into that sort of thing. Cien no mas is all you have to say.

I guess my point being if you want to leave the resort, consider Manuel Antonio. The beach in the park is the best Ive seen in CR, but also packed and after a hike and animal sight seeing, I only spent a short time on the beach before I needed lunch. Had lunch in Jaco too on the way there the day before and if you want drinks, atmosphere, and shots etc, Jaco is nothing to scoff at... just dont go there to lay on the beach. CR is a cool place, anyone can find their thing.

Manuel Antonio is a giant tourist trap IMO. Don’t fall for the “get a Tico guide bc only their magic eyes can see the sloths!” bullshite that everyone else seems to fall for. It’s all staged.

What?

We did get a guide and he spotted and pointed out multiple animals we wouldnt have ever known were there. Also while we admittedly could have seen one sloth we found another and had a scope with him so we could watch both close up. Also pointed out multiple crabs that were cool to watch and a distant howler monkey we would never have seen without the scope, some different bat species and insect life we wouldnt have seen. I would say it did move slow and was not really a hike but more educational, but again not staged or fake. They also picked us up at the hotel so it was nice not to park in that madness.

I just came back this week . I’ve been to Los Suenos/ Jaco 8 times in the last year because my Venezuelan gf’s sister has a place there . It’s a great spot . Jaco is a party town- lots of booze and hookers. Los Suenos is upscale. Go to the marina and book a fishing trip with Maverick. Definitely go to Jaco Bar ( my peeps). Stop at RELEASE (nondescript roadside diner ) outside Los Suenos for a great breakfast from an excellent chef and best waiter ever. There is a great ATV tour between Jaco and Tarcoles. A day trip to La Tortuga isle is excellent ( unlimited cocktails a nice lunch, snorkeling, fun as hell banana boat). I’m saving to buy a place there and researching remote opportunities that’s how much I like it.

Lots of disgruntled little down-voting travelers here apparently.

Thinking about a trip next year. I’ve heard the roads are not fun to drive on. Would likely stay near a rainforest as opposed to the beach. Any thoughts/recommendations on renting a car vs paying for transportation each trip?

Fly into San Jose as early in the day as possible, rent a car and drive to Manuel Antonio. If you fly in late rent a room at Barcelo Hotel or La Sabana Suites or KC hotel and leave early the next morning. That fits your bill. Rent a house with a pool. The roads are indeed terrible, but as long as you stay on them and get out of San Jose you’ll be fine.

A lot of people on this board also recommend Arenal/ La Fortuna as do I , for the hot springs around the volcano.

San Jose isn't that bad. I thought that the Jade Museum was well worth my time, and a stroll down one of the pedestrian streets in that old part of town (Avenida Central, I think) was pleasant enough.

But maybe you were just talking about driving, in which case, I agree. I didn't try driving in San Jose, but I've been behind the wheel in Guatemala City and Panama City, and it's not fun at all. Like, at all.
