St John Trip Review

Here's what I know about St. John, having just returned from a week there.
-It is breathtakingly beautiful.
-It is the perfect location for people who want to do something active in the morning (hiking for us) and then waste away on a beach for the rest of the day.
-It is quite expensive. We intended on buying groceries to save some bucks, but peanut butter was $11/jar, bread $6 a loaf, lunch meat was $11 for a regular pack....etc
-On the 'expensive' note....Michelob Ultra was 25.99 for a 12 pack. I asked a local where I could find reasonably priced beer - his response was - yeah...just drink rum.
-I thought I hated snorkeling. I was wrong. I just hadn't done it in a place worthy of snorkeling before. Buy yourself a decent $25 snorkel and mask from amazon before you go. It will make a huge difference. The ones we ended up renting were just junk.
Restaurants:
Skinny Legs - an absolute must. We ate there twice, and almost went back for a third. Drinks were awesome, environment was awesome. All we ate was the burger of the day, but it was worth every penny.
Aqua Bistro - HARD PASS. Maybe we got it on a bad evening, or maybe it just ain't what it used to be. Combination of poor quality and being very expensive is a bad combo.
Extra Virgin - Good enough experience with good service...but very, very pricey. $305 for 2 of us (including 2 cocktails each) after tip. To be fair, if I had ordered differently, I'd probably have felt better. I ordered catch of the day which was an interesting sounding mahi, but it just wasn't that good. Had I ordered the filet, I'd have likely been less disappointed.
Banana Deck - Fun place, good environment, food was pretty good with plenty of options. Worth the visit.
The Landing at Cruz Bay - had breakfast there. EXCELLENT. Probably my favorite food stop of the trip.
CoCo Jims - potentially the nicest, coolest guy I've ever met. Exemplifies island life. Super hospitable and gracious with us. Food was good and very interesting. ALSO-GOOGLE MAPS IS A LIAR! It tells you Coco Jims is down in Cruz Bay...it is not. It really is that small outdoor place right next to Midway Market.
Salty Mongoose - We enjoyed it, but we were all very drunk and very hungry before we ever walked up. Pizza was awesome.
Wok on the Beach - Super, super awesome. They were absolutely hopping the night we ate there and apparently short staffed, but took care of us and everyone else. Food was really, REALLY good and a pretty good value. Could have gone there on one of the first nights and had leftovers for a couple others.
LIMEOUT - What a cool place. Floats in the middle of Coral Bay, but the tacos (even @ $10-12 each) where really awesome. Drinks were awesome. We got swept up in the awesomeness and kept ordering drinks and souvenir shirts for the girls. Spent a ton there, but it was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
CHARTER BOAT TRIP, Rockhoppin Charters
On the recommendation of VAbuckeye, ( i think) we spent a day with Captain Steve of RockHoppin Charters. Spent a few minutes shooting the shite with him and telling him what we hoped for.....he made it happen. Snorkeled, limeout, more snorkel, just taking in the scenery and then a private beach. Great, great day. Cost right at 1,100 for the day, but that included $200 tip. Again...drunk, happy, and feeling gracious. Definitely a good idea to do this early in your trip as it gives some perspective and scope of where you are and what you have access to.
Coral Bay is where its at. Quiet. Peaceful. Beautiful. Likely wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.
You don't need fancy clothes. Decent shorts and a goofy tourist Hawaiian shirt is as fancy as you'll ever need. That could have saved us some room in packing....which leads me to the next opinion.
Don't check bags. Its just a headache and you really don't need that much stuff. Should be able to fit everything you need in a carryon and a backpack.
Parking was a racket in cruz bay. We used slim man's a couple times and the lumberyard a couple times...be sure to check with your jeep rental company - some of them let you use their spaces when you rent from them. We paid nearly $200 total just for parking.
Any questions just ask. Just wanted to get my musings documented

Glad you enjoyed it. We’re heading to Jost next Sunday and can’t wait. Looks like (almost) all of my refs worked out.
Captain Steve. Glad you liked that fricking midget. He’s a good dude but if you catch him on a hangover it’s a different day. St. John changes many peoples views of the islands. There’s nothing like it.
Extra Virgin it’s an Italian joint. Just get the osso buco next time.

Great report. Thank you for sharing.
We’ve been to St. John 4 times. 3 times on the Cruz Bay side and once on the Coral Bay side. I don’t foresee staying anywhere but the Coral Bay side for future trips. I wish they would tear town some of the houses that were destroyed during the hurricanes. These are eye sores.
The trade winds you get high above Coral Bay are outstanding and make it feel 10 degrees cooler.
On our most recent trip it was our first time noticing what seemed like the locals that were born and raised on the island were put off by visitors. The locals have always had the island time vibe but it was different this last trip…. But the locals that aren’t originally from there couldn’t have been any nicer and we greatly enjoyed all of these conversations and interactions.

Groceries are expensive, even more so in coral bay than Cruz bay or midway grocery. We leave Monday morning for a week. Staying in upper Carolina again. Hope to catch miss Lucy’s and ekaete pink corner open this time as I never could last time.

Also, how were the departure lines at STT?
Posted on 7/8/22 at 6:45 am to AUjim
Thank you. We will be flying in on Thursday for a week and this will be our first time there and any tips are helpful.
Appreciate being forewarned on spending a fortune on poor food at a restaurant. Don't mind spending but the food and service must be there.
I was planning on renting a small boat for a day ...would that worked for you instead of a charter?
We are planning on cooking some at the rental house overlooking Grand Cruz Bay...what is the best market to shop at on the Cruz Bay side..Starfish?
Snorkelin' - can you tell me more about the bests places yu went ? Also, do I need to buy fins or just a masks/snorkel? Anyone use or recommend a full face mask versus the traditional?

Starfish?
Yep, it's the biggest market there.

Don’t overlook the muffins from the bakery at starfish. They are great.

I can only speak to what it looked like on a Monday morning for us flying Delta - but -
We had heard horror stories of folks spending 3 hours in customs from a St. John traveler facebook page, so we decided to try and get there 4 hours before our departure. We arrived just before 9:00 local time only to find out that the Delta counter to receive checked bags didn't even open until 10:30. Pretty frustrating, because we literally can't do anything until we get our bag checked, but not the end of the world. The other airlines were already there and getting their folks through. We sent the girls ahead through while we waited for the Delta people (who actually showed up around and got going around 10:10). The airport really seemed to be pretty adequately staffed...customs and security were both about as smooth as could be. The lines were steadily moving. Ended up sitting in the airport restaurant playing cards for a couple hours waiting for departure.
So...overall, not terrible. But checking bags proved to create our pinch points, and really only on the return trip. First, not being able to go through customs and security. Second being the over hour long wait for our flight's bags to hit the baggage claim carousel in Atlanta.

Not 100% sure. We hopped on with our guy at the National Parks dock at Cruz Bay and then went around the south side of the island. Very, very beautiful scenery, but YOU ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT WANT TO DO THAT ROUTE IN A 'SMALL' BOAT. We were in a 32 ft center console and even then the ride was an adventure. Once you're in the coves, its smooth and peaceful, but there were some significant rollers.
Snorkeling - You prob don't need fins....the water was so calm and (everyone probably knows this except me) you almost can't sink...we used pool noodles the first few times, but after i realized i could literally just float, we left them behind as they just became something to manage.
Hansen Bay/Pelican rock. Pretty cool spot, not sure how to get there by land.
Salt Pond Bay - told Captain Steve that we had to see a sea turtle, he put us on several there. This is definitely accessible without a boat.
Blue Cobblestone Beach - probably my personal favorite spot and definitely accessible without a boat.
Ideally, you probably make a day out of Salt Pond/Blue Cobblestone/Drunk Bay. Take your hiking boots and your water shoes, some good light snacks and plenty of water in your backpacks. Get to the Salt Pond Bay trailhead and hike down to the beach. Leave your beach chairs and beer icechest out of the way on the beach and then go all the way up to Ram's Head. The trail is not incredibly hard, but there are sections where it is HOT with no breeze. Take plenty of water. On the way back down, put on your water shoes and snorkel Blue Cobblestone. Sit around on the rocks and dry off and then finish your hike back to the Salt Pond and Drunk Bay side. Do not miss the Drunk Bay side. Once you've explored those enough, head back to Salt Pond beach and hang out and snorkel for a while.
We also snorkeled all the beaches we went - There is a huge rock at Cinnamon Bay that we went out to. Very cool. But so was Maho and Hawksnest. We never even made it to Trunk Bay. The day we tried it was just too busy and there were other great options.
Basically just keep your snorkeling gear with you all the time.

We leave in a week for 10 days on island. I am trying to convince our girls that we can do carryons but I am going to lose that battle.
It’s a different mindset there. Roll with the hiccups and the rum is cheaper than water.
Cant wait to see those gallon jugs of Painkiller and Rum Punch in the fridge when we arrive at the house.

There's an Auburn guy who bought and runs The Beach Bar at Mongoose. We also had a few out in the street at Woody's. Next time we go back I want to stay on Coral Bay side just to do it differently. Definitely our favorite place we have ever travelled to.

I noticed this as well. Saturday seems to be turnover day, so I figured the airport is busier then. We are flying in and out on Monday, so I’m hoping for less lines this time.

FYI, Beach Bar is at Wharfside, not Mongoose Junction.

No, you do not. The only time you have to clear customs is coming back from the BVI and that isn't done at the airport.

Me too. We're excited to go back to Jost next (not this) Sunday.
