Who has done the least with the most?

Was looking at Metallica. They have been together since 1983, almost 40 years. They have put out only 10 studio albums.
What other acts did little over a long popular career? And this would be bands that have been together the whole time and didn’t break up.

Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, & And Justice for All just might be the greatest 4 album stretch a rock band has ever had. They still put out good albums even though they are nothing like their 80's output. This debate isn't going to work out well for you.

My Bloody Valentine has released 3 albums, only one of them in the last 30+ years. They'd probably get my vote.

But back then you put out a record and toured for years, because it was solid work and people would still go to see and hear it..
Then after you put out about 3 or 4, you can coast off the songs from those records people want to hear most when playing live. Therefore, pressure is off selling out a tour.
Metallica was probably semi retired in writing music after the black album, they had enough material to fill a 1 and a half hour to 2 hour show.

In the 70’s and early 80’s artists put out records at a pretty good clip.

I look at it differently.
I don’t think it’s doing the least. I’d rather a band put out fewer, but really good albums than churn out a bunch of crap and only get a handful of good songs.

Agreed - it's quality > quantity
Should Metallica have more albums? Yeah probably
But Iron Maiden and Judas Priest released yearly albums throughout 80s and 90s that were so much fluff and filler but all had 1-2 amazing songs. You could probably make 2-3 albums of their content from those areas.
(obviously not including the masterpieces within those timeframes like NOtB, Powerslave, etc)
Nowadays bands are releasing all songs as singles and you have the Youtube/Insta artists who can't record anything more than a 30 second clip at a time. Not as many full songs or albums anymore.
