C-Milazzo
1B-Morgan
2B-Guidry/Romero
SS-Pineda
3B-Thompson
LF-Dugas
CF-Crews
RF-Pearson

Obviously a better offensive option than Milazzo would be great but I have heard CJJ say on many occasions that Catcher is a position that he isn't willing to sacrifice defense for offense. He always praised McManus for stepping up when everyone else was hurt but made sure it was known that he'd have Milazzo out there if he was healthy regardless of his batting stats.

I also think that one of those 2 freshman will play 2B if they make it to campus.

What do yall think?

I think dugas at 3rd, thompson at 2nd and someone new in LF.

Otherwise, you are right on with my thinking

It sounded like to convince Dugas to come back Jay was telling him he can play 3B. If that's the case I see Thompson at 2B, Pineda at SS and then Kling in LF, or Stevenson if he improved.

Even if Guidry and/or Romero make it to campus? I feel like those 2 guys are day 1 players and have a hard time seeing them on the bench.

Oh when we get another transfer, I'll probably start a whole new thread and argue with myself about who is the odd man out now.

For better or worse, I get attached to the guys that play and I have a hard time with an established player getting beaten out by a new guy. But then I get attached to the new guy and the cycle continues.

I think 1 of Guidry/Romero could play but I don’t expect CJJ to want to force 2-3 true freshman into the lineup.

If you just take the current roster + known transfers for next year I'd say we are looking at:

C - Milazzo
1B - Morgan
2B - Thompson
SS - Pineda
3B - Dugas
LF - Stevenson
CF - Crews
RF - Pearson
DH - Beloso

Then you plug and play with the other transfers and incoming class with a few of them.

I agree, I meant that between them one has to play.

The lineup pieces you have already

1B Morgan
SS Pineda
CF crews
Of/DH Pearson
Of/DH Dugas

Thompson will in competition for 3B/2B

Milazzo at the very least will be part time C

If Dugas plays 3B I dont see either beating out Thompson, Pineda or Dugas at least on opening day. Lots of experience there between those guys and none of them are "needs to be replaced" territory by any shape of the imagination.

If Guidry/Romero make it to campus their time will come, just might not be on opening day their first year here. There's always injuries, guys who go through slumps, etc...and they will get chances.

Keep in mind Stevenson nor Pearson were opening day starters here. They worked their way in for different reasons over time.

Yes Morgan, Crews started right away here, but they werent exactly competing with entrenched good experienced starters either.

Morgan had the only competition really with Beloso and considering his defense vs. Beloso it was no question who was starting there in 2021

Thats definitely true. I'm fairly young and have only followed LSU baseball since 2008 but the opening day lineup is almost never the same as the lineup in June.

Only exception maybe was the 2014-2015 team where the entire lineup hit .300. We should have won it all that year.

For conversation, I like what you have except I would put Kling in RF and Pearson in LF.

Dugas either 2B or 3B with Thompson at the other. Don't think Romero will get to campus, but if he does he will likely take 1 of 2B or 3B. Kid can hit and don't strike out. Said on an interview for the combine he only had 2Ks this season in high school. Said his whole high school career he had less than 10Ks.

However, let's revisit this conversation in August.

Edit: DRock, I never thought of the Dugas in LF and Kling in RF with Pearson at DH......I like that.

I'd be shocked if Thompson isn't in the lineup. CJJ has repeatedly spoken highly of him and his mental toughness.

I like it but no way that many pieces fall into place how we want it to. That has way too many good things happening for us in the portal and draft.

Crews started out in RF, too, then headed over to CF. Kling may not make it to campus, but Mic Paul is another OF that may factor in.

In the past it's all been rumor and behind the scenes talk that he would make it to campus.

He recently told a local newspaper writer in his area that he's going to school and passing up the draft. (ETA: Local to him in PA)

To my knowledge he hasn't taken his name out of the draft, but this is the first public statement he's made about getting to campus.
