I try to try a few new BBQ joints in TX when I can. Here's some notes from the past few months:

LJs BBQ LJs BBQ, Brenham, TX. Made the TX Monthly Top-50 TX BBQ Joints. Had brisket & ribs. It was good but nowhere near "wow" good. Surprised it made the top-50. Note: it's only about 1.5 miles from Truth BBQ so may wanna hit 'em both if you're in the area. Don't mean to sound negative; was hoping for more.

It's All Good BBQ, Spicewood, TX. Just traveling by and stopped by. Had brisket and sausage and two types of cole slaw. Much like LJ's it was good. And both types of slaw were good. Note: had I known Opie's was just down the road I would have eaten three. Oh well.

Roegels BBQ, Katy, TX. Opened up in Katy just off I-10 a few months back. I love the Voss Rd location and consider it among the best BBQ joints I've been to so my expectations were pretty high. But he's got work to do at his new joint. Had brisket, ribs , and mac-n-cheese. All ok but not nearly as good as the original location. If Russell can get this one up to the Voss rd quality it would be a great stop for I-10 travelers.

Brett's BBQ Shop, Katy, TX. Love Brett's. My hometown BBQ stop but had never had his brisket enchiladas until recently. I think they only do 'em on Thursday. They are chocked full of brisket but also drowned in sauce. Very good. Worth trying but will probably with stick with the regular items next time.

Interstellar BBQ, Austin, TX. Can only say wow and recommend. Rated #2 in the Top-50. Had brisket, ribs, slaw, and the free beans. Only negative was the BBQ sauce I like to sop bread in needs some upgrading.

Note: on my way out got to talk with Warren for about 15 minutes who was working the smokers. Really nice guy and interesting life story. Said business really took off after the rankings cam out. Has family in Katy. I don't hear well so I may have missed something but I thought he said they were working on a collaboration with Goldies out of Ft. Worth to be held near the end of June in Austin. Said they would feature some items from both joints and also collaborate on some new items. Would be a great event for BBQ aficionados but haven't seen anything from either's web site.

Roegels main guy from the Voss location just went to work for Dozier’s so expect the learning curve at their Katy location to be a little longer than expected.

The enchiladas from Brett’s are incredible. He and Jaqueline are killing it and will do even better things when they move into their new location.

I really dig LJ’s and I agree with you that it’s hard to find a negative at Interstellar.

Opie's

Had that for the first time back around Easter. Loved the ribs. Brisket was pretty good. Sausage better than most Texas BBQ places. I normally don't bother with sausage, because I just prefer the stuff from Louisiana (don't care for the cheese and all that in it), but Opie's was much better than I was expecting. Also, while I don't really care about sides at a BBQ joint, I did enjoy their tatertot casserole.

I really need to try that and Harlem Road BBQ.

I 100% agree with your take on Roegel’s-Katy. It’s almost as if all the smoking is done at the Voss location and kept in a warmer at the Katy store. Russell is giving people a terrible Roegel’s experience if they don’t dine at Voss. My moist brisket was dry and room temp. The ribs weren’t even close to their stellar cousins coming off the Voss pits.

Brett’s brisket enchilada pro tip: order a full tray of enchiladas on his site by Sunday night for Thursday pickup. Freeze individually for later enjoyment.

Would you say interstellar is better than Terry Blacks? I love Terry Blacks but have never been to Interstellar. I’ll be in Austin in a couple weeks so may have to check it out.

I'm going to be in Austin soon, very briefly, and not able to make it out to Lockhart.

Are there many BBQ places in Austin actually better than Franklin? I don't mean on par with to make the wait at Franklin's not worth it. I mean just flat out all around better.

Great post. Man, I'm jealous. I wish I could find some kind of BBQ map of all the good spots in a given area of Texas. Say, if I'm in the Houston area, try all these places. Or maybe Austin. Or Lockhart. I've never been to any of them and am a huge Central Texas BBQ fan so I'd love to say leave on a Thursday and drive to wherever and hit all the good joints over the course of three days.

I've heard enough talk about Austin to know which places I'd like to hit but that's really the only one.
