I've never done much gaming, I used to like some occasional FIFA or MLB or a COD single player campaign. I have a PS4 somewhere, but haven't used it in a while.

If I want to play some FIFA or F1, etc. for an hour now and then after everyone goes to bed, do I need to be looking at a console again? I'm not going to build a gaming rig, my main laptop is a 2021 MBP M1 Pro, which I assume isn't going to offer much. I have no idea what Steam is, but I stumbled on the Deck thing and that looks cool. Sounds like you can't get it though.

Appreciate any suggestions on ideas to check out.

Steam is an (more like "the") online gaming marketplace. It's history is longer than that, but it doesn't matter. Steam Deck is simply a handheld computer put out by Valve who owns Steam. Very cool tech, but frankly, I'm not sure if it would fit what you are looking for.

That said, yeah, based on what you're describing, I think you're looking for a console experience. And I say that as someone who is 100% PCMR.

Ha yeah I heard that, although it's just the FIFA-specific aspects right? Clubs will be largely the same?

Anyway, I could probably easily switch to some other mindless time waste game of choice if need be.

Thanks for responses.

Sounds like a XBox Series S would be right up your alley. $299.00 and you can get back into this generation gaming.

I thought so too, but I know it's not native 4k. Is that upscaling going to be noticeable for me?

Only downside with the series S is the storage space but it is expandable via external SSD.

Console would fit your wants better and be cheaper. In addition, if you want to play any multiplayer games most are heading towards cross platform so you will be able to play with any of your friends on another console or PC. A benefit for PC / Xbox is that the Xbox game pass works for both platforms if you decide to upgrade to PC later.

If the game has dynamic resolution scaling that goes below 1080p then it maybe noticeable but for the most part I think you would be fine. Most games can run on it at 1080p 60FPS or 1440P at 30 fps. If you are really concerned with performance, especially down the road, then step up to the Series X.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm not sure if I would say I'm concerned about performance, but I do want it to look as cool as possible

I also don't want to jump into it only to feel like I'm already behind, so perhaps the X is better for this.

The drop in frame rate would be more of a concern for me. 30fps compared to 60 makes a huge difference in action games and not all games give you the option to choose performance over graphics. I know I recommended the S initially but yea it sounds like the X is what you want.

Outside of indy games, i don't think i've played a single thing at 60fps.

What’s the bad news? I thought they were continuing to make the game but just remove the FIFA branding.

None of the current consoles can do 4k native on anything graphic intensive at a playable framerate. I wouldn't get bent out of shape about that. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something.

I use my series x as a hub for all my Netflix, hbo, Hulu, prime, etc as much as I use it for games..if not more. Its convenient I guess
