Black Iron Pot Rust

Cooked a pastalaya the other night in the black iron pot. The wife didn't know any better and left water in the pot to soak overnight. Found it this morning and the lid is rusted pretty bad, but the pot itself doesn't seem to be too bad. Any tips for removing the rust?

Hit it with a Brillo pad, clean it, and reseason it. That’s all it takes.

That’s not rust that’s damaging, just simple surface rust. It will come off with soap and water.
Clean it, put it on the stove, heat it up to dry, oil it, and heat it, wiping several times, repeat oiling, etc.

When you are finished cleaning your cast iron how long do you put it in the oven for once you coat it with oil?

You don't have to put it in the oven. You just clean it really well like others have said with a brillow pad or steel wool (I prefer steel wool). Once it's cleaned thoroughly, you just put it on the burner on the stovetop and turn it up to high to dry out. After that, put a little bit of oil or pam in the bottom and use a couple of paper towels to spread around all over the inside. The more you repeat this process the more your cast iron will restore from being rusty.

Some folks use salt as an abrasive, and lodge does sell a chain mail strip for scrubbing. Either should work fine.

Once you're done scrubbing, cook four strips of thick cut bacon well-done. Let it cool and smear that grease all over, then pour out the loose grease. Heat it back up til it smokes, then cut the heat.
That's it.

There is no reason not to clean your black iron with soap. A heavy (or even medium) scrubbing pad does more damage than anything.
Warm water, soap, and a sponge is all you need. After cleaning it, season it. I have a high dollar Griswold dutchoven. I clean it every time with soap.

steel wool.
Stainless Steel Wool will not imbed in the cast iron.
