The “gig industry” is killing traditional low-skilled employers

Like all of you, I’ve been noticing a decline in customer service at some places and an obvious shift to older aged folks at others.
I believe this is the result of moderately motivated low-skilled folks choosing gig jobs. These jobs appeal to folks who want to set their own schedule and get paid daily.
The apparent aging of service industry folks may be due to older employees reluctance to try out work that’s tech dependent.
Fast food and retail is undergoing a huge shift. It’s a great time to invest in robots & self-checkout businesses.

Saw a Circle K in BR that had self checkouts yesterday. Not even just the ordinary registers that you operate yourself. These handle all your items at once.
Thought it was interesting when even convenience stores are going that direction.
I wonder what they machine would have done if I had asked it for 3 #4's, a Powerball, and some cigarettes from behind the counter.

Fast food and retail
Both killing themselves. (Not that I care) But look at Chick-fil-a. No problem finding workers, management is usually "older" - late twenties onward - and they stay slammed. And handle it.
Everywhere else hires the only people willing to work for what they are paying and it shows.
I'd go to popeyes 3 times a week if they were run like a chick. They aren't so I only go about once every 2-3 months.
Same thing with retail. Half the time you ask someone if the store has something and they either don't know or tell you to order it online.
I'm tired of chick and canes for my fast food options but they are the only ones with good service. I'd love to start a "good" fast burger joint and run it like a chick and start francising it. Someone will. Service will win out.
You're correct about the gig economy so we will see what happens there. It's fine for some, and will always be a fast way to make a part-time income, had a girl deliver the wife's walmart order in an audi the other day - so good for her for working for whatever reason she was.
I don't know if there really is a problem with the gig economy, other than it can probably become over-saturated quickly and earnings decline and make it not worth doing, but for those that stick with it, I guess you ride the waves of ups and downs.
*Old man rant. Social media isn't doing any of these kids any favors. Everyone wants to be a youtube or an influencer, or whatever and nobody wants to work. Hell, nobody ever wanted to work, but if you don't, then don't gripe if you don't have the things you want.

Chik fil A also pays very well and their job recruiting and location placement is genius.

Yep, me too. And the girl working was reloading it with money in the middle of a Saturday. Busy time, 5 people checking out, and she pulls out what looked to be about a $10k stack. 6-8 inch stack of bills. Probably wasn't all $20s but that's what I saw. Proceeds to crouch down and reload the machine. She's gonna get knocked out and have all that $ stolen soon. She's lucky I'm not a drug head or I would have done it right then.

IMO there are attractive opportunities right now for new businesses / entrepreneurs that focus on service excellence to compete.
Entrenched legacy businesses / big box stores are getting lazy. They should be punished for that.
I would gladly pay a little more to go somewhere that offers better service.

They operate on biblical principles. Their mission is to glorify God. What they have going takes serious dedication. But you still have labor issues and while much lower than others in their market, they have a 60% turnover rate.

There’s a place called Good Times that’s a great fast food burger place out West. I’m an investor. CFA model of hiring for a burger place.
