I found a used Xpress 18’ all welded aluminum boat for sale with a 150 hp Yamaha motor. Is that motor too big for an aluminum boat? It’s a 2012 four stroke. Thanks

The boat will have a max motor HP rating, stay at the top of that range and you're good. Above that range, you could cause stress on the weld joints that could crack over time.

Thanks. I haven’t bought it yet but I did find some specs and they say max hp for that hull is between 115 and 150. It would seem like their would just be one number rather than a range.

Boat motor size recommendation

it all depends on the bracing it was designed with.

my 17ft alweld is rated for 50hp but i could have got the same exact boat rated for 150hp if it had extra bracing and reinforced transom

just pay careful attention to the welds at top and bottom of transom for cracks. if you see cracking anywhere dont buy it. anything can be fixed but cracks mean the boat has been treated badly and abused so there could be lots of other weak spots you dont see.

by the way, my 52x17ft alweld with 40hp outboard will do 35 mph empty and 32mph with a regular load of fishing gear and two people. just because you can put a bigger engine doesnt mean you should or you need anything that big. i could probably do 70mph with a 90 on it but why?

My dad used to have a 16.5 ft express with a merc 90 and it was decent on speed and just fine. Is it a bass series or bay? So my educated guess would be a 115 would do just fine and 150 would be a max rating at the most.

You are correct. There will be a plate on the boat that shows the U.S. Coast Guard max horsepower for which that boat is rated.

LINK

Boats greater than 20 ft. in length are typically not required by the Coast Guard to have such a plate.

That is the perfect all around boat/motor for freshwater fishing IMO.

Any idea on what y’all think it’s worth? It’s this model and is actually a crappie series but it’s being used as a bass boat. It’s a model H18PFC/BS

I’m not understanding the NADA guide as it’s saying it’s worth between $21-32,000. I’m seeing used ones at $14-19,000 but most have 90-115 HP motors.

This one is in decent shape but needs some TLC. Carpet is pretty nast and some dings here and there.

The range is often helpful. Some don't necessarily want the max, and the manufacturer knows that below some number, the boat just will not work properly.

They do this to allow the customer to have the same boat but at a lesser price. My boat is only rated for a 115 and it is almost 19 foot and it should have a 150 on it. From the factory you can get anything from a 25hp to a 115hp on it.

Look at the placard on the boat to see what the max hp is. 150 seems kind of big for an 18'.

I use to run an 18ft aluminum triton with 150 merc pro xp. It was a 2 stroke so fairly light weight but I think the new 4 strokes have improved the weight differential. I’m not someone who tries to optimize every MPH and never once felt like it was overpowered. Seems there is a trend to underpower newer aluminum boats. I wouldn’t even consider an 18 plus foot boat if it didn’t have at least 150hp. If the price is right I would go for it. I haven’t heard many people complain about a motor being too big
