They say with bears you need hard cast bullets for penetration. Grizzly are notorious for their thick skulls and ability to shake off small caliber low velocity rounds.

having a 9mm against a Grizzly is about as effective as throwing rocks at them.

at a bear minimum, you need a 10mm or 357 magnum, and even that is pushing it with big grizzly's, especially if you are going to have an encounter with them right before winter when they are at their fattest. Those two are great calibers for black bears.



In the rare instance you are charged by a Grizzly, the odds you even get a shot off is slim. They are a lot faster and quieter than you think. If you have the time to prepare for a charge, bear spray first, and if that pissed them off enough to come after you after that, then a .44 magnum/.454 Casull/.500 will finish off the job with one shot.
the thought process of thinking you're going to get 17 shots off with a 9mm is just silly. you'll be shitting your pants and getting mauled by the 3rd or 4th completely ineffective shot, if you even get one shot off.
