Do people genuinely believe some are in prison for life over possession of marijuana?

I see this repeated a lot, especially on social media. I smoke almost everyday but this lie just pisses me off for some reason. I don’t think there’s a single person in America locked up in prison long term who’s only charge they have ever gotten is simple possession of marijuana. Yeah you might go to jail for the night for having a gram of weed (not likely anymore) but no one is in prison long term for this.
Most of the time its the weapons or the violation of probation that they’re on for much more serious crimes that gets them sent to prison. There might be a few who were only convicted of possession but they’re serving the maximum possible sentence as part of a plea deal to get all the other charges dropped. In that case they accepted a deal and likely got years taken off their sentences. Do y’all know of anyone who’s been in prison for simple possession of a plant as they say?

3 strikes laws
some are in jail for 30 years for one joint because they had 2 prior crimes on their records.
cash a bad check, strike one
get in a fight with old lady and she falsely claims you slapped her, strike 2
get caught with a bag of weed just trying to live in peace and be happy while doing nothing else wrong, strike 3 and its mandatory you go to jail for very very long time
some states have gotten rid of the 3 strikes BS but many still have it

I heard that if you are caught smoking weed that the police will shoot you on sight.

Yeah 3 strike laws are total bs

Deputies in my county have you throw out personal use weed on the roadway. Felony possession cases are the lowest hanging fruit with our DA. No one’s doing time on it unless they’re on probation or parole for something else. I understand that’s not the same discussion as 3 strike laws but just my .02.

Negative ghost rider. Just think judges should be able to probably weigh each case correctly on it’s own merrit without having an over riding policy.

3 strikes = three serious felonies. Anyone in prison for 10+ years is in for more than bad checks and simple weed possession.

30 year prison sentence is effectively a life sentence in a lot of instances.
Unfortunately there's not a small population of self proclaimed conservatives that think the war on drugs is about protecting people.

I know in the 90's because of a certain senator's crime bill, Memphis installed "Zero tolerance" where you had people jailed and sentenced to life crimes that today would get a few years. Zero Tolerance
One sentence led to Trump's 1st Step Act with none other than Alice Johnson.
Johnson was convicted in 1996 on eight criminal counts stemming from a Memphis-based cocaine trafficking operation involving more than a dozen people.
You can look more up on her here.
essence article about Kim Kardashian and Trump's involvement in her pardon
With the help of Trump, Kim Kardashian, and a bipartisan effort Alice Johnson walked free after being ignored by Obama

After hitting rock bottom in her personal life–divorcing her husband, losing her youngest son to a motorcycle accident, and filing for bankruptcy and losing her house–Johnson got involved with a group of people who were transporting cocaine. In 1993 she was arrested along with 15 others, and later convicted of conspiracy to sell cocaine and money laundering. Though she said she never actually sold drugs, instead working as a “telephone mule” passing messages between people, Johnson was labeled as the leader of the ring and sentenced to life plus 25 years in federal prison. It was her first office.

That’s BS and pot should be legal. But I addressed this in my post. I’m looking for examples of people charged with only simple possession of marijuana and are in prison long term for that specifically. This doesn’t qualify.

I don’t agree with the war on drugs. I’m just wondering why some have to lie about there being people locked up for life for possessing a plant. Because that doesn’t happen. Like it was already addressed, 3 strike laws are for felonies. In my OP I very plainly stated I was referring to someone being in prison long term who’s only charge they’ve ever gotten is simple possession.

There is a guy who has done odd jobs for me. Tries to get a job but cannot because of a single felony conviction for marijuana on his record in his late 20's. Caused him to lose his job working for the state as a computer tech and pretty much led to a lifetime of poverty. Granted his family is generally poor, but that one conviction that stuck him in jail for 2 years may as well have been a life sentence.

La has had the habitual offender statute way before most 3 strikes. I worked at Angola in Classification back in the 90’s and had a guy serving life as an HFC for felony credit card theft out of Orleans. Back in the 80’s and 90’s Harry Connick didn’t frick around. The guy had been in and out of prison and they finally had enough.

Cops use drug laws against gang bangers the way tax evasion was used against the mafia. They weren't after the mafia for tax avoidance, but that's what they could pin on them.

I had a very good friend (RIP) that spent almost two years of a three year sentence in the Bibb County, GA jail. His crime? Possession of two ounces of pot. Two ounces.
He was raised by his grandparents from the time he was a baby. Both passed away during his two years locked up for this heinous two ounces of pot possession. He was denied a pass to go to either funeral.

How about not at all for it ? It’s wrong ,has been for a long time and ruined a many of a good old boys life since the 70s for getting put in jail over it. Most any county in South Mississippi you are going to jail for it, tThey will lock you up for a joint in Washington parish too. Destroying lives for a got dam revenue stream.

The inmate probably didn't mention he procured the credit card mugging someone at gunpoint. He probably also didn't mention his pervious prison stints.
I'm about the biggest "bleeding heart" you'll ever meet. I believe people who serve their time should have an opportunity to reenter society and become a functional citizen. I believe someone who has genuinely changed shouldn't have to live with a crime hanging over his head forever. I'm against locking people up for drugs crimes.
However, I've learned from experience that the vast majority of people in prison absolutely earned the sentence being served. I don't deny that there are false convictions and maybe a very tiny number of people who just got a "raw deal" but the vast majority of prisoners are dysfunctional sociopaths that 100% belong in prison.
The storyline of the guy who "just took the wrong path" or "fell in with the wrong crowd" is horseshite and any con who gives you such a story is full of shite. The former inmate that has truly earned a second chance will tell you "prison saved my life."

That is horse shite. No one is charged as a habitual offender over that scenario.
Reality is we have a lot of criminals with double digit arrest records.
