Progressive rock titans Yes have announced the death of drummer Alan White at the age of 72.

The star, who was born in 1949 in County Durham, died peacefully at his home near Seattle in the U.S. today following a brief illness.

'The news has shocked and stunned the entire Yes family,' the band said.

He was probably the drummer for the longest period with them. I think Bill Bruford was only the drummer for a few albums.

As said, great drummer, hate to hear the news. Putting that rhythm section back together with The Fish.

His partnership with Chris Squire is one of the most underrated rhythm sections in all of rock history.

Also played on John Lennon and George Harrison solo projects. Had he not hooked up with Yes, he would likely have been as well regarded a session drummer as Jim Gordon, Russ Kunkel, Dunbar, Porcaro and those cats from the 70s (and 80s).

His work on Relayer and Going for the One is some heady prog. Loved that shite. He also killed on the Levin White Torn album.

Sad to hear because he an Squier were so in sync. However, Steve Howe is purportedly still alive.....he just looks like he should be dead.

I saw Anderson, Bruford Wakeman and Howe back in 1990. I've never seen White play with them, as 80's Yes never toured close to where I lived and I was obviously too young for the earlier years. White was the one I listened to the most, though, as my favorite albums were Yessongs and Going for the One.
