Ukrainian Court Sentences 1st Russian for war crimes

This is a dangerous game in my opinion. Last week hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers surrendered to Russian forces. In the game of tit-for-tat diplomacy, it's only a matter of time before the Russians hold their own show trials.
Wars are invariably ugly. Jailing 21 yr old soldiers for life might "feel good", but has far-reaching implications for those that remain in combat areas.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Ukrainian court sentenced a 21-year-old Russian soldier to life in prison Monday for killing a civilian, sealing the first conviction for war crimes since Moscow’s invasion three months ago.
Sgt. Vadim Shishimarin pleaded guilty to shooting a 62-year-old man in the head in a village in the northeastern Sumy region in the early days of the war.
He testified that he shot Oleksandr Shelipov after being ordered to do so. He told the court that an officer insisted that Shelipov, who was speaking on his cellphone, could pinpoint their location to Ukrainian forces.
Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating thousands of potential war crimes, as the world has pushed for Russia to be held accountable for its invasion. Russian forces bombed a theater where civilians were sheltering and struck a maternity hospital. In the wake of Moscow’s withdrawal from towns around Kyiv weeks ago, mass graves were discovered and streets were strewn with bodies in towns such as Bucha.

They have time to hold court for POWs?

On what grounds?
No way they do this. They will simply be prisoners of war, and the Russians will may get away with pushing interrogation to the limits like we do at Guantanamo, but will not dare execute or hold trials for Ukranian soldiers.

Lol oh really? Russians were never really big fans of imprisoning or executing prisoners, the vast majority just starve to death or "shot escaping"
I don't think 10% of German POW's ever made it home alive.

Yeah my first thought as well. Same with the recent public visits to Kiev by our old and decrepit politicians. The whole “war” is just weird.

I wouldn’t want to be the judge in these cases when Russia takes over Ukraine. These judges are dead .

I don't think there is a fair equivalency there - different era, different circumstances, defender vs. offender roles different.

I don't know, man. I think they are going to hammer these Azov guys, especially if any of them were killing people in Donbas the last 8 years.

quote:I would compare Soviet treatment of German POWs to CSA treatment of Union POWs. Yes, lots died. They had been invaded, did not have the facilities and simply did not have the resources to devote to proper care.

Russia today did the invading and has more than adequate resources for basic care.

The Russians labeled all German pows as war criminals. Most were worked to death. The last POW/war criminals weren't returned to Germany until 1952.

A spotter on a cell phone is not a civilian target. I’m sure this guy got a vigorous defense.

Agreed.
Is it reasonable for a soldier in a combat zone to suspect someone on a cell phone constitutes a legitimate threat?
The answer is obviously "yes".
Is that what really happened? I have no idea.
The Biden administration threw out the word "war crimes" within the first few hours of the invasion. The Ukrainian poppet president followed suit almost immediately. That was a dumb thing to do.

He is just a pawn now for exchanges. He won’t spend life in Ukraine, he is just an item of barter now.

This is nothing compared to what will happen to the Azov soldiers who surrendered.
From The Moscow Times...
All this bluster notwithstanding I expect some prisoner exchanges. Until then, oooff.

Leonid Slutsky, chair of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, called for an exception to Russia's moratorium on the death penalty so that the evacuated Azovstal fighters — who he described as “Nazi beasts” — could be executed if found guilty of war crimes.
quote:
But shortly after the Russian Defense Ministry's statement, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, ordered lawmakers to draft a standing order prohibiting the exchange of Azovstal troops for Russian prisoners of war. “Nazi criminals should not be subject to exchange. They are war criminals and we must do everything to bring them to justice,” Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin was quoted as saying.
