why sleep apnea has become more common as we've become fatter

Apnea promotes weight gain through hormonal changes.

The actual problem is further upstream.

why people develop apnea when they gain weight at astounding rates.

It exacerbates the existing structural issue.

Jesus christ fatty. You can't breathe or sleep because you're fat. You're not fat because of some breathing issue.

The sooner you accept this the sooner you can start saving your own life.

Obesity has a high and rising prevalence and represents a major public health problem. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is also common, affecting an estimated 15 million Americans, with a prevalence that is probably also rising as a consequence of increasing obesity. Epidemiologic data support a link between obesity and hypertension as well as between OSA and hypertension

Apnea might promote weight gain but weight gain also promotes apnea.

Weight gain can cause a lot of your health issues to spiral.
