re: LSU Basketball is only missing one element on its roster...

quote:Nobody can fault him on his defense and overall hustle. At 6'5" he was not a good rebounder or inside scorer. He only averaged 3 rebounds a game. His offense consisted of open three pointers from the corner which he shot 40.3 % on. He had early success with the three but the more he took the more his percentage was going down. Overall he shot 43.9 % from the field which was good but reflected him taking few shots. One of his main weakness is only shooting 55% from the free throw line. That makes you a liability in tight ball games especially in the second half.
Mwani ain't starting on this team.
I don’t know why people think this. He can shoot competently, he plays defense, he rebounds competently.

At 6'5"
Will be valuable because all of your guards are 6’3” & shorter. Will have to be available to defend prototypical SG & longer wing players

Shot .429 out of conference from 3 on 1.2 attempts per game
Shot .441 in conference from 3 on 1.9 attempts per game
So you are wrong on both of your points. He actually shot more 3’s as the season when on, and his percentage went up
quote:

He shot 20 FT’s all year
The percentage is rather inconsequential due to the sample size. He was in the 70’s last year. He does not shoot enough or handle the ball enough to even worry about this.
quote:

54% of his shot attempts were 3’s.
He made 48% of his 2pt FG’s.

quote:So while he is defending SG, one of our short guards has to defend a 6'7" forward? Or do you think McMahon plays him at shooting guard despite his lack of handles and offensive ability. Also the making fewer three's as the season went on was actually on a game by game basis. My memory maybe faulty but I remember him starting to miss a lot halfway through the SEC. You could be right about that though. He still can't get a shot off guarded though unless he has worked on a quicker release and some other offensive moves.

It just depends on the matchup. But Wilkinson is one of the only true wing guys they have. I imagine they will run a bunch of 3 guard stuff similar to Auburn but Wilkinson is going to have to get minutes. And I think he has some untapped development offensively

Justice will get a LOT of minutes. He didn't play a ton last year I know but he was hurt for all of nonconference and by the time he was ready most of our rotation was figured out. He was a top 40 kid in his original class.
I think he is going to turn into a very good player. Last year is going to help him tremendously.

The rumor I heard was he was the surprise visitor. Who knows?
The secret visitor was Lofton and that came straight from one of the coaches prior to the visit.
Osunniyi committed to Iowa St. and I don’t know that LSU really even pursued him that hard.
I think Lofton ends up at UH and Phillips commits to LSU. If Phillips doesn’t commit on Tuesday, then that is a sign something has changed and coaches are maybe feeling good on Lofton.

Shareef O’Neal would be a great final piece.
If you say we'd like him on the team to perform the same role as last year, I'd say they can do better. Period.
He couldn't beat out an unproductive FR for minutes even when healthy.
Look, he's Shaq's kid and I will always be on his side. But for my money his time around here is up due to his somehow being mistreated (?) and him not wanting to play for a new coach. (though that is exactly what's going to happen whether he wanted to stay or not) That's what's out in the open about the situation, anyway. He choose the Portal.
I wish him the best.

I looked at the stats again and there seems to be a real discrepancy between the stats you are quoting and what the LSUsports.net page says. You say that Mwani shot 42.9 on threes out of conference and 44.1 in conference. Yet the official stats say that for the season he shot 25/62 for 40.3. There are no other games outside conference and non conference so where did you get your stats from? Also the point I made about him hitting fewer threes as the year went on is supported by the fact that in the last six games of the season he only went 5/19 which is 26.3. In our tournament game against Iowa State when it really counted, he went 0/5. I sincerely hope he does better this next season but my stats were not wrong.

Shareef clearly outplayed Reid once he was healthy. It was a poor coaching decision to not play him over Reid during conference play.

I just don't believe WW - or any HC - is gonna sit or restrict the minutes of a player he believes gives the team a better chance of winning.
Use a guy's minutes strategically? Of course. But limit them when he believes the guy sitting is better than the guy playing? No.
So I'll disagree with your "coaching decision" aspect but in the end it's all just tRant opinions.

We definitely need one more post player that everyone knows is going to be a starter imo. Right now we have several guys that might fit that bill, but we do not know.

How dare you forget the medium height white guy who’s only plus is that he can nail the deep shot like it’s nobody’s business?

Phillips would be a nice addition to THIS roster. He had good size (not just height) as a freshman and would allow Williams to play a more natural PF. LSU probably wouldn't ask Phillips to do much more than rebound, dunk, and defend the rim. But that is all they would really need him to do with a very solid post scorer in Williams. Add him to the mix and LSU has a roster than can be competitive in the SEC. It would probably be a bit unrealistic to expect LSU to be one of the top 4 teams in the league (Arkansas, Kentucky, Auburn and Tennessee should be really good). But that roster looks like it could definitely be in the mix for the 5 - 7 spot in the league and a NCAA Tournament appearance. Anything more than that would be lagniappe and COMPLETELY unexpected from where the program was in the wake of Wade's firing.

But I'll wager that Sampson looks at him as a ticket to another Final Four. (not to say UH won't get there without KLJr)
He's got very good outside scoring coming back along with guys that have the length/athleticism he covets. A skilled inside post player - though he doesn't really fit CKS's main profile - is another weapon for teams to worry about.
I like that fit very much for the Coogs if it happens.

I might be in the minority here, but I like Phillips for this last spot better than Lofton, if I get to choose between them.
Lofton's a terrific player, don't get me wrong, but what he won't do for you is protect the rim. He isn't tall enough for that.
Career 0.7 blocks per game playing Conference USA ball tells you that as a 5, people are going to shoot over him. Now, he'll get rebounds for sure - but we took Kendal Coleman, who's longer and is also a prolific rebounder.
Whereas Phillips IS that rim protector. He can't score the way Lofton can, yet, but he'll block shots and play interior defense without fouling. Plus he can play above the rim, which is something that's a nice asset when you have a point guard like Juice Hill who's an alley-oop machine.
Tomorrow could be a great day if the buzz out there about Phillips pans out.

Right about where we were this year but with significant potential - due to coaching & freshmen - to be better.
I haven't looked at the schedule to see who we only play once next year but a split with UK/TN/AR/Aub feels like it would be a huge achievement.

The only people who know whether he'll foul a little or a lot are the Refs and the SEC office!
I'll take the over on Hill to Wilkinson Alley Oops at 1 per half.

The size of the back court is the big red flag at this point.
I could see a lineup of
Miller PG 6'2"
Ward SG 6'7"
Wilkinson SF 6'6"
Williams PF 6'9"
Phillips C 7'0" (if he comes, if not, another 6'9" guy)
Such a lineup wouldn't be a problem size-wise. This group may not start, but it's at least a viable option.
