I signed up for a long range 101 class and need to pickup a rifle. Ive only shot my 2 CCW pistols and my AR15.

Money really isnt an issue, so dont have a specific budget. Everything ive read on the /r/longrange suggest a Bergara B-14R Carbon Bolt Action .22 LR.

Thought I would ask the group here, if you could build a .22LR to have to learn with, what would you do? Rifle and optic suggestions.

Assuming I enjoy it, i'll prob end up getting another rifle capable of 2000yrds. Thats the range distance I have access to.

Thanks in advance!

If $$$ doesn’t matter, check out Vudoo gun works.

ETA: I want to see video of those 2000 yard shots.

Money no object:
Vudoo or Rimx

For starting out,

CZ 457 or similar, Bergara, or even the Ruger Precision 22.

You can spend as much as you want on optics,

What caliber are you thinking on taking out to 2000?

If you are looking for a 22lr, in addition to the bergara check out the CZ457 and Vudoo rifles. Any of those should be good. You could get a vudoo barreled action and drop it in whatever chassis/stock you are going to use for your big rifle. That way thered be a familiarity between the 2.

For the scope, parallax adjustment down to 10yds or whatever is super important. So dont pick something that only adjusts to 100 or what not.

Is this one of those classes where they simulate 1,000 yards by making the target tiny?

Minuteman Rifle Training

Minuteman Challenge

quote:

The rules are simple, really. Place the target at 25 yards and load a magazine with 20 rounds. Set a timer for 60 seconds. On start, you must fire five shots at each circle.

You may fire these shots from any position of your choice, and you do not have to perform a position change or reload to complete the challenge. Unless, of course, you live in a state that restricts your magazine capacity.

You may use an optic and sling for this. Also, the rifle may make contact with the ground- so monopoding with a magazine is allowed.

Each circle approximately represents a 20? target scaled to 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards.

This is the class I was talking about. It's a target at 25 yards with reduced targets to simulate a long distance shot.

Gotcha. No, this is the 1st of 3 classes taught at this long range outside Tampa. Im a bit of a nerd, so I like to take classes and reading stuff. My copy of Long Range Shooting Handbook by Ryan Cleckner just showed up. So i'll be reading that this week.

two things I can tell you that you will need for shooting long range (I've only shot out to 600yds).

you will likely want to start reloading. Precisely loaded ammo is mandatory to accuracy out to distance.

you will absolutely need a chronograph. There are different types.
I have a Labradar and like it a lot. It doesn't affect your accuracy when shooting (like the magnetospeed).

I would go with an Anschutz. My dad has an older 54 Sporter. Most accurate .22 I have every seen. With match ammo I put 10 shots in a dime at 100 yards.

Off the shelf rifle with consistent meticulously constructed hand loaded ammo will beat the most expensive rifle money can buy with off the shelf ammo.

I was going to say the marlin XT, 60 and 795 are some of the most accurate 22lr's you can just pick up off the shelf but it shows they are not in production right now! I made some project apple seed guns out of 795's and they out shot guns 10X their price. I don't know what they do to the rifling in those barrels, but it is something special.

This is the absolute truth shooting at distance. Inside 200-300 yds it doesn’t make that much of a difference but past that, hand loaded ammo that has exacting consistency will out shoot a $10,000 rifle with off the shelf ammo.

Anyone that says otherwise has never shot longer distances (the down voter)

Volquartsen makes the best after market offers on 22s. You can build your own using their products.
I had Rumble Wepnz build mine out of Milton FL. I use a NightForce scope, Sachlis trigger, and a lot of Lapua ammo. I get 1/4 or better MOA at hundred. I can keep them in an inch bull at 200 depending on wind. I have more money in this custom 22 than I do in any other rifle I own. It is addictive.

Remember with .22 LR quality ammo is a major concern.
