Planning a trip to Big Sky later this summer. Family of 4 (kids are 8 & 11). Trying to decide to stay in Moonlight Basin or Town of Big Sky. NO real plans other than to drive to yellowstone 1-2 days and maybe do some fishing. As of now we are slated to fly into Salt Lake and drive to Jackson Hole for a couple of days then through Yellowstone and on to Big Sky. Thanks for any thoughts or recommendations.

Buck's T-4 lodge is decent and affordable. It's in Big Sky. For West Yellowstone area, there are plenty of places to fish and explore. Rent a boat on Lake Hegben or just drive around and see stuff.

Big sky Resort is nice but "resorty". Can't remember much about moonlight. been awhile.

You can grill you own meat at HiCountry Tavern & Grill near Lake Hegben.

If you make it over to Livingston, eat at the Chop House. Owned by LSU baw.

I would add blue moon bakery for pizza and riverhouse for bbq. Bucks T4 (restaurant) is good, but it's a place my kids wouldn't appreciate. I've stayed at the main base area twice in Big Sky, but not moonlight basin. The town of Big Sky itself is nothing to write home about in the sense of a classic mountain town (think Steamboat/Ouray/Tellluride), but the outdoor opportunities in the area are great. The mountain biking at the resort is cool, but depending on how adventurous your kids are they may be a little young for that.

I would stay in the Town Center area just for the convenience of having all of the shops and restaurants close by. Horn & Cantle at Lone Mountain Ranch is an excellent date night spot, but not sure about with kids. They would definitely get a kick out of doing a trail ride or something like that there, I bet. As others have mentioned Blue Moon has excellent pizza and River House is a cool spot. There's a farmer's market/concert series that happens on, I want to say Tuesdays, in the middle of the town center area that's well worth checking out if you can time it right. Do the Ousel Falls hike with the kids, it's easy and cool. Enjoy it! Got to spend a couple of weeks there last August and it was fantastic, can't wait to go back.

I would stay in town, in the summer not sure there is really an advantage of staying on the mountain.

That’s one of my favorite drives. You’re going through West Yellowstone and up into Big Sky?

Neither of these make sense for you, but the two most beautiful exits to the park are the Beartooth Pass in the NE, and the Gardner exit in the North, which takes you through Paradise Valley
