NOLA East used to be a booming suburb not different from what you find in suburbs around Houston, Dallas, etc. And you could still say you lived in the city!

For all you kids out there, here are some pics of how it used to be. More at the link.

We used to go ice skating at Lake Forest Mall when we were really little kids.

Mid to Late 80s that, um, ended.

That sure looks different than it does now. NOLA looks like a pleasant place to raise your kids in those pictures. Gee, what happened?

Overbuilding with 14% mortgages, followed by oil bust, followed by exodus of oil companies to Houston, followed by out of state developers buying up all the foreclosed properties and turning them into Section 8 rentals, followed by Katrina

I don't think it was as nice as a Katy or The Woodlands... but it was close.

It's so sad driving through NOLA East and seeing all of the abandoned, blighted areas where businesses once stood.

NOLA East is an absolute shithole. Pontchartrain Beach closing was the start of it.

Lets try this, no shakedowns, let for profit companies come in and allow them to do what they wantr with the area. With NO strings attached.
City would come back to life.
