Planning a family trip to Hawaii in July. Thinking 3 nights in Maui and 3 in Kauai. Any recs on hotels, and best options to fly from New Orleans? Thanks!

Personally I would pick 1 island and stick with that, that's just me though (I have been to Hawaii twice and both times just stuck to 1 island).

I did 5 days in Maui by itself and didn't get to do everything I wanted to do and have enough beach time as well. For instance, the Road to Hana, which I assume you will do, takes most of 1 full day.

But by all means, both islands are different, beautiful, and worth doing. Do what YOU Want to do. If you want to do both, do it.

I stayed in a VRBO not too far from Lahaina when I did Maui. Make sure to eat at Mama's Fish House. Expensive but worth it.

Doing 6 days in Maui and 5 days in Oahu. We are leaving Saturday. Some of the best times we had on our last trip to Hawaii was just renting a Jeep and cruising around the islands. We packed our snorkeling gear and my surfboard and just stopped at random places. Hit food trucks and small little local spots for food. Can’t wait

What you're doing is doable but it is a very long trip from New Orleans and personally I would focus on one island. You said family. Are kids involved because that would make so much travel in 7 days unbearable for me.

ETA: One of the bigger mistakes I notice for people planning trips on this board is being overly ambitious in the number of locations they want to visit and stay at.

Sounds great! Are you flying into and back out of Maui? From New Orleans? Flights are difficult in July….
Thanks

Oahu can be a bit of a shitshow, just fair warning. That's an understatement. Also Oahu is obscenely expensive.

Pro-Tip: Stop at Foodland Grocery as much as you can and just get the poke by the pound, and eat that for lunch and etc. Its really good and cheaper.

Pig and the Lady in Honolulu Chinatown (which is very seedy area) is very very very good.

And if you're renting a car, get your gas at Costco as much as you can. Gas is EXPENSIVE in Hawaii, and it makes getting gas at Costco worth it.

Thanks Fun bunch on that Costco recommendation we have a membership. We are not staying in the city like we did 5 years ago. We are staying in a Airbnb on the north shore on Oahu. Local food trucks and grocery store not to far away. We did the expensive stuff last time. There is also a farmer’s market 5 mins from where we are staying.

We have done two islands (Big Island & Maui) twice on same trip. It worked for us but wife (no pics) has family out there. We stayed in Lahaina once and Kihei the other time. Must take family to house of raising sun. It may be tough for kids because it’s so early but it’s amazing. Sky is so clear and colorful. Mama’s fish house is amazing but is expensive. We did a Luau at big resort on Wailea and it was really fun. Kids would love it.

I'd see if there's any way you can get on a waitlist during your trip.

Any Monkeypod location is pretty good. Very enjoyable.

Lahaina Grill most people consider the 2nd best after Mama's.

When I went we went to The Mill House which was amazing, but it closed during the pandemic. Its a beautiful location and something else opened in its place Cafe O'Lei, no idea if its any good but pretty location in a valley.

Roy's is on every island and great.

Merriman's is also on every island I think and pretty good.

I would highly encourage you to explore Asian cuisine while there.

Braddah Hutts bbq if going to Hana.

South Maui Fish company has the best poke around and their fresh grilled marlin is so damn good.

Save yourself the hassle and just go with Maui the entire trip. It’s literally heaven on earth. Amazing food, beaches, hiking, golf etc.

Don’t be phased by the limited availability online for reservations. We made each restaurant just walking up including Mama’s Fish House (sat us at the bar)

Down the Hatch is fantastic. Monkey pod is very good as well

It's a food truck, but north shore noodle bar is top notch. The garlic fried noodles and the pork belly bao are out of this world.

Stick to Maui! We got a reservation for Mamas well in advance but we were able to walk right up and get a table for lunch twice, it was that dang good. Ho'okipa beach right past Mamas is a must see as there are 50 to 100 (maybe more) sea turtles that come to rest on the sand every day. Old Lahaina Luau is fantastic but you may need reservations well in advance. Go to the top of Haleakala for an incredible view. Paia is a cool little town with shops and things like that. There are tons of things to do on Maui alone.
