So we are in a bit of an uncommon position in the NBA, in which we lost the first round of the playoffs but are likely looking to keep almost the exact same team

Untouchables:

CJ McCollum
Jose Alvarado
Herb Jones
Trey Murphy III
Brandon Ingram
Zion Williamson
Jonas Valanciunas
Larry Nance Jr.
Kira Lewis Jr.

Question marks:

Jaxson Hayes
Naji Marshall
Billy Hernangomez
Tony Snell
Garrett Temple
Gary Clark
Jared Harper
Devonte Graham

So our depth chart looks something like

PG - CJ - Jose - Kira
SG - Herb - Trey - ?
SF - Ingram - ? - ?
PF - Zion - Nance - ?
C - Val - ? - ?

Obviously some lineups will have point Zion, Zion at the 5, Nance at the 5, Jones at the 3, Jose at the 2, and so on, but that’s a pretty bare bones version of what we will have.

Things of note:

We will have the Lakers 1st round pick, which depending on its position has potential to be an instant impact kind of guy.

Jax is available for extension if we want it. He would be a backup 4/5

Graham definitely seems to be the odd man out in our back court especially in terms of money

So what moves do y’all think we need to make, and who do you think needs to be offloaded?

Billy is untouchable

Eta: for reasons not related to his basketball skill ***

I’m not saying you’re wrong but it seems kind of limiting to make someone untouchable who didn’t play any meaningful postseason minutes

At some point I feel like you have to draw the line between “I really like the guy” and “he can be a piece on a contending team” because that’s what we’re trying to be

Griff talked about this specific thing today LINK

quote:

Billy Hernangomez is a non rotational playoff player and we refused to trade him at the trade deadline because of what he gives the group.

I think it was Willie on JJ's podcast compared him to Dani Rojas from the tv show Ted Lasso, the always smiling star player that walks around constantly saying "football is life!". He's doesn't cost much and he makes everyone else happy to be at work. If 5 guys on the roster are developmental/break in case of emergency types, it'd be nice if the are able to make the 10 that do play better.

Jax is the biggest question mark for me. He will be a much better option backing up Jonas and Zion than starting. He is far from untouchable, though.

I've seen enough Graham and I'm ready to move on if we can get some return. He isn't a negative asset, though. I wouldn't be distraught if he returned in a lesser role.

Kia Lewis definitely isn't untouchable.

Temple is guaranteed next year and isn't going to bring anything back in a trade as more than salary filler. He's a good culture guy and didn't seem to mind cheering from the bench.

Billy may be the odd man out in the front court if Nance returns, which is no guarantee.

both billy and nance are under contract for 2022. They will both 100% be back unless they are traded

the only player on a standard NBA contract who is expiring is snell

It’s not that I think he’s untouchable in the traditional sense, but what could we possibly benefit from offloading a guy on his third year of a 4 year rookie contract coming off of almost a full season injury.

He didn’t show enough consistency that I think many teams would place high value on him, so I feel like the only real path is for him to stay on the team

Hmm I saw that as him saying Billy was untouchable this season as opposed to guaranteed next season, but maybe you’re right

Griff pretty much eluded to this during the press conference today or at least was during the deadline. You might be right even if joking.

PG: CJ/Jose//Kira
SG: Herb/Murphy/Graham
SF: BI/Naji/Temple
PF: Zion/Jax
C: Jonas/Nance/Billy

They need to get off Graham’s contract and maybe draft a guard that can shoot with length. We are too small at guard. Trey is really a 3 that is long enough to play small ball 4. This team really doesn’t need much but you can never have enough shooters.

How are you going to upgrade from him?

You have to have 11th, 12th, 13th dudes at the end of the bench.... why not Willy?

Fair. I just mean if we end up going the trade foot to try to get 3 and D then if a team wants Willy in a package I don’t think we would say he’s untouchable. Idk maybe I’m wrong

I disagree. We need 3pt shooting in any new pieces we bring in. Hart can shoot but not that well

he’s also under team control in Portland
how are you proposing to get him?

and let’s say for argument that Portland declines their option. Which guaranteed contract will you eat or dump with an asset to open a roster spot?

He really is the missing piece. Imagine this two deep:

PG: CJ, Jose
SG: Herb, Josh Hart
SF: BI, Trey
PF: Zion, Jaxson
C: Jonas, Nance

That’s such a nasty 10 man rotation, plus we can play big and small. We still have BillyH, Kira and Naji as reserves plus a top 10 pick. Only way this happens is Portland decides to blow it up, and it may be another year until that happens.

Josh Hart is only going to play for a team that'll give him 25-30 minutes a game.

I started a thread and laid out a general template of rotation Minutes next season. We don't have nearly enough minutes to give Hart.

So Jose/Hart/Trey are all gonna get about 15 minutes per night?

Our pick should be a combo 3/4. Athletic, defensive minded with an outside shot. Is that asking too much?

they’ll get a good player at 8/9 if that’s what happens. Several of Mathurin, Davis, Duren, Daniels, Eason etc should be available there. If they get lucky then they’ll get a really good player 1-4

gotta trust the scouts and hope for some luck. Sharpe is the guy that I’ve read about that seems to be a high risk/reward option as well
