Yes I think they were a few miles away and afraid of getting blown up. So they didn’t get any closer.

A few years after that happened I was working at a casino. A dude came in calling himself "the backpage king". He had just gotten a settlement from DH and spent it all on hookers and blow then went back offshore. Took him about a month to blow through it at the casino.

Lucky bastard

Drilling gonna drilling. Ain't learned shite. As long as the well site leader/company man is God, nothing will change.

You’re a moron and couldn’t be further from the truth

15 years in this industry, sitting on a platform right now. I got off of Thunder Horse as fast as I could after DH. Please tell me how things have changed? If Doug from Mississippi with barely a HS education is sitting in the drillers chair and the WSL says "do this stupid shite" he's gonna do it. It's that or the poor house. That's the crux of the issue.

ETA: Ty for the compliment.

I think the biggest change to come out of it is SWA and UWA. If Mr. Jimmy had the UWA he could've legally told BP to pound sand until he was satisfied things were safe to resume work. Without fear of reprisal.
But..... If companies give the company man UWA, you're right... we are back at square one and the incident still would've happened. From the SEMS Plans I've seen, about half give UWA to the OIM/Toolpusher and the other half the the Company Man..

Did you help get people out of the water or play any part in the rescue efforts? I can only imagine being a witness to something like that.

When we we arrived we went to the Damon Bankston, tied up to a life raft. At that point everyone who made it was either on board or was getting off the life boats. People were yelling at us to go search for the missing crew members. I remember them saying 22 people were not accounted for..turned out that 11 were killed.

We untied and started to search and got dangerously close looking at floating debris. Had to haul arse away several times do to explosions and the heat from fire. It would sneak up .could feel it and then boom it was hot as frick.

We also made 3 trips to fire crew boats that were heading to help and retrieved their medical kits and took to the DB (we could move a lot faster) as that's were they were setting up medical triage. I actually gave them my medical kit ($1500 offshore kit). We talked to one crew member when we dropped off med supplies. Gave him some waters (a cold beer and some smokes) he was asleep in his bunk when exploded. Threw him across room. His head was bandaged and had some other areas bandaged as well. Think we talked for 20min or so..he was shook the frick up. Hopefully we helped him.

There's a lot more I can write.. I'll try to put it all together and post it within the next few days if everyone is interested?

Well I would absolutely love to hear what you saw/experienced. I work offshore, so it means a lot to me.

Absolutely. If you can find the time to write it up, I would love to hear about that. Im sure others would too.

And it's not just out of some morbid curiosity for me. I used to work in the fire service and rescue stories were always fun to sit and share with the other guys.

Ive worked offshore GoM as well as in the North Sea for both BP and Equinor and can say that the difference in safety protocol is immense. Granted there was about an 8 year gap between my work in the Gulf and what I was doing in the North Sea so some things may have changed. My experience was that the GoM was a "good ole boy" / wild west culture where as the NS was much more planned, controlled, and managed. Unless things changed dramatically, I wouldnt want to go back to work in the Gulf.

Ok, I'll write it out and post it within the next day or so. Sooner if I can get it done correctly. I haven't written a paper/story in a long time and if I do this I want it to be done correctly (grammatically and spelling i.e not using do when it is due..lol )

I'll also post all my pictures and upload the videos I took.

I remember watching them a year or so after and hearing our conversation on the boat and in background could hear the VHF on Ch16 the coastguard talking to rescue choppers and the crew boats. It was pretty eerie to me.

I remember the pilots saying *Diver in water" a few times that night. Not 100% sure if I captured that with video.

Wish I could get a transcript of the Coast guard recordings from that night.

We actually spoke with them shortly before the first mayday.

I had noticed a flashing light in distance, so I got my binoculars to look. I was stunned when I looked and the rig was on fire. I passed them to my buddy to confirm and he was like no way and then said holy frick you're right. So I got Vhf to ask the rig operator at Horn Mountain if he could see it and knew which rig it was and could contact.

Then I hailed Coast guard to repoet to them we could see a rig on fire in distance. Not even a minute later shite went down. We heard rumblings across gulf and then like sonic booms sounds...then Mayday Mayday Mayday..

Coast guard confirmed my vessel name and we gave them out lat/long and heading readings. I had used radar to to lock on DWH so i knew exactly where it was.. we were around 14nm away.. I took pictures of the track on chartplotter when we docked and before turning if off or erasing trip log.

Th CG proceeded to tell me to safely haul arse there to help (pretty much required by maritime law to assist with a Mayday call unless you as the captain deem it unsafe for your crew and vessel. My guys were like hell yeah let's get our arse over there . More to come later.

Gordon was a really nice guy and a solid guy. It's trite to say stuff like that about the deceased but in this case it's really true. My heart still breaks for his family.

Love me some GD and Jerry Band. First GD shows were in Eugene Oregon 1990 at Autzum Stadium. Little Feat opened..2 outdoor day shows.. we drove from Yellowstone where I was working for summer. Funny thing is my buddy (hs friend) and I went with 2 other guys we met who were from NOLA. They had an old VW Westfallia Van. The ultimate Hippy Van. I was in no way what one would describe as a hippy at that point in my life (small town AL boy summer after freshman year at Bama). It was a fricking awesome weekend. Got to camp in stadium parking lot starting Friday night til Sunday when shows were over. Effin A wow.

..oh shite just remembered about a week after we got back my buddy and I hitch hike out of park to go wee Willy Nelson at some rodeo arena.. fortunately we had saved a little blotter .. nothing like tripping at a Willy Nelson concert dancing with a bunch of 30 to 40 yr old cowgirl woman.. enough of that story.

I was with MI Swaco at the time also. Unimaginable. I still think about it when I walk into the shaker room on my ship.
