That can’t be Kevin Durant.
Durant isn’t an alpha

Lakers have to be killing themselves.

Jeannie Buss will still be insisting she got the better end of the stick on this one.

Ingram’s arms are bigger than KD’s legs.

I don't quite disagree with the comments in the thread, but I mean...they did get a ring.

Considering the Lakers and their fans figured they would get multiple rings or at least be a fixture in the finals, it is a massive disappointment.
One ring in a pandemic season, first round exit in the next regular season, missed the playoffs entirely the season after that. And still don’t own any of their own unswapped picks until 24 or 25, depending on the Pels’ choice.
They got one ring and then cratered their franchise for potentially the next decade because they will be so depleted by the time LeBron leaves.

Yes they could have easily made a run at multiple titles without the AD trade IMO. They had talent, they just wanted to rush the timeline…it worked for the one title (with luck) but then they had to be near perfect with FAs and injuries after and they have failed at both of those

They are still the lakers and still play in LA. And it’s basketball. Even without any assets they are always 1-2 disgruntled Klutch superstars away from being contenders.
I mean we can’t sit here and complain about the big market advantages and then also pretend like those advantages won’t exist over the next decade

My projection is based on the idea that they will trade some combo of AD, Westbrook, THT, Nunn, and their 27 and 29 picks for a sack of magic beans.
LeBron won’t want to stay if they don’t cater to him but, OTOH, LeBron is getting older and has already made it clear he wants to end his career with whatever team drafts Bronnie.
There aren’t a lot of good options under that, as it means tying up more years of picks and selling low on AD to get a mix of guys they could have had for cheaper last year if LeBron had signed off on it, like Buddy Hield.

Well that’s a pretty silly scenario
They would either go full rebuild and trade AD for a boatload of picks (injury prone or not, he would still get a massive haul), or they would keep AD around with Lebron or with another superstar to pair with AD if Lebron left
The NBA is incredibly “easy” to turn around your franchise prospects, all it takes is hitting in 1-players. How many of these teams have we buried recently for being terrible at GMing, only to have them be up and comers or contenders in a season or two? The pels are a perfect example of that and they had a lot harder of a road to deal with than the lakers ever would have

You have no idea what the options are at this point. Every 3 months we have a new NBA superstar whose tired of his current situation. And guess where most of them want to live? LA
And again, they wouldn’t need to “sell low” on AD. He’s still one of the top players in the league, take your fandom or ill Will away from it, teams would be lining up at the door for a chance at AD.

And what is LA’s current load of assets?
Westbrook as a large expiring
AD as a large long term contract.
THT and Nunn as about $25m in ballast for salary matching
Two future firsts for 27 and 29.
That is a shite war chest to get anyone no matter how badly they want to go to LA.
If they make it to free agency, they can sign next offseason if LeGM doesn’t tie up a lot of long term money trying to compete this year.
Just because someone has a guy on a large contract doesn’t mean his old team will take Westbrook and a handful of used condoms for them. Especially if the team has ANY form of leverage.

Okay, this is where we’ve gone two different paths You’ve moved the goal posts a bit here from your original “they will struggle for a decade” that I initially responded too so this arguments gone off the rails
Yes in the short term they have limited options (not as limited as you seem to think, but yes their amount of assets is low)
There’s no contract in this league that’s untradable, and if you think there’s no other superstars who can land in LA, think again because that changes every week in todays NBA.
I never intended to argue that the Lakers would be competing next year, my point was that thinking that their short term issues are going to guarantee to have long term implications is just being ignorant of their actual advantages in this league.

Again, please stop pretending like AD isn’t a massive asset there’s 26-28 other teams in the league who would gladly go after AD and have no problem with that contract

There’s no such thing as an untradable contract. There’s always a way over the course of 2 seasons time. If there was an untradable contract in the NBA, then Westbrook would still be in OKC and Chris Paul would be in Houston still

Point is that they don’t exactly have assets between picks and AD, who is Mr Glass.
If/when LeBron bolts, they won’t even have high lottery picks to fall back on because they traded out so many picks and swaps.
That means having to construct a roster around a perpetually injured guy with no draft picks available minus buying firsts and seconds from other teams for cash.
A team CAN succeed through good scouting and player development. The Lakers have been utter shite at development for about the past decade, though, which means you go as far as AD and any FAs you get can take you.
Not a good thing when you have a shite roster of whatever veteran hangers-on are signing with you this year. And the quality of those signings likely declines this year after last year’s mess.
While basketball is a game that can be changed quickly through adding one or two players, the Lakers don’t really have the ammo to get those players nor have they really shown they can get the most out of them.
