Can non scholarship athletes get an NIL deal

This may be a dumb question, but I was wondering if the mens basketball team were to lose Scholarships could someone come in with a sweet NIL deal for a 4 or 5 star player to come on as a walk on? Thus not needing that scholarship anyway?

Gordon gonna hook us up

Yes, a walk on can receive an NIL deal, however, there are rules regarding visits which kind of prevent a 5 star from being a walk on

Yes. There was a baseball player that voluntarily gave up his scholarship since he was getting some NIL money.

Offer enough money and we don’t need them to even really visit. All kinds of ways to evaluate talent

What you may be forgetting is you don’t pay taxes on scholarship money. You do on NIL money so the deal would have to be enough to where it’s more than a scholarship after taxes.

I didn't have a scholarship and had an NIL deal while in college. TBH I didn't play any sports and my "NIL" deal was a valet job that I had.

Some kids are even rejecting the scholarships bc the NIL is so big they can let someone else have the scholarship

I guess I’m missing the joke. Here is a snippet from an article in The Advocate earlier this year:
LSU has already benefited in a big way.
"I had one prominent player on our team made some money in terms of name, image and likeness, and his dad called me and said, 'Coach, I know you're trying to put together a roster. We're going to give you back the scholarship for this year,’ ” Johnson said.
"I don't think the NCAA really understood what they were doing with this and it's going to cause some issues, but no matter what it's been — the transfer portal, NIL — my job is, I can I can either cry about it or I can figure out how we need to do it to do well for us."
Johnson did not name the athlete who's family who gave back his scholarship, but moves like these could have a deep impact on powerhouse baseball programs with prominent players, like LSU.

BYU gave all of their walk-on football players NIL deals

Didn’t Parker Edwards get one from walkons?
I think technically he was on scholarship this season but ykwim

NIL is not supposed to be tied to you being at a certain university or even seeing playing time. So they absolutely could.

Saw on the news that the cheerleader who stood on her teammate's shoulders to retrieve a stuck ball got NIL deal. Can't remember who was playing. Anything is possible.

SURE.. I would think it would be easier.
I knew a player that got paid to go to college as part of an old baseball contract. The idea was that if baseball didn't work out, he could go to college, possibly play football, and not need a scholarship. He could go where he wanted to go.
Because he was not on scholarship, he had far less restrictions. I would think NIL would work that way too.

Any person with a pulse can get an NIL deal if they are marketable. The problem was that the NCAA previously prohibited student athletes from doing it.

Well, an Oregon booster is picking up all the scholarships for all the walk-on players, so yes, non-scholarship players can receive NIL.

NIL really has nothing to do with the NCAA. It was a court decision. Basically the athletes own the rights to their name image and likeness and could profit from deals using those and the NCAA could not prohibit it.

I started a thread on this and DUMBASSES can’t think out a simple strategy.
