The B/W live shows on youtube are fcking awesome.
I always heard sweet home and some freebird growing up, but That Smell really turned me on to them as a band. Remember the day I found out .38 special was the younger(?) brother...

The netflix documentary in 2018 really gave me a whole new appreciation for them.

Billy Powell, killing it on the piano, after 10 years as a glorified roadie desperately wanting to be a member of Skynrd before Van Zant heard him play the piano version of the song and hired him as their keyboard player.

Fantastic story. When he finally got the chance to play what he would add to the beginning of Freebird he blew them away. They had no idea he was THAT good.

I dated his daughter in the early 90’s. Never got to meet him though as it was fairly short-lived. Good girl but I wasn’t super into her. Saw The Cure at the old Jacksonville Coliseum with that girl in 1992.

See Neil Young, Southern Man.

But also because Neil Young wrote a lesser known but equally preachy song called Alabama. Thus, Sweet Home Alabama. And of course Ronnie references being a southern man in the song too. Just perfect.

Ah, ok. I had put Alabama in my original comment, but then changed it to Southern Man because I wasn't sure if I was remembering it right.

Tons of bands make live music like that and can jam out on a song or move in and out between tunes. It's what good musicians do. I love me some skynard but to say people dont make music like that anymore is just ignorant.

I've always wondered why the song wasn't "Sweet Home Florida" since that is where the band is from.

Bc they recorded in Bama, not Florida

This isn’t it. It was 100% a response to Neil Young’s songs Alabama and Southern Man.

I watched a documentary on them. I like their music, along with all types of music.

But I think people are downvoting this because you just started a thread saying you watched a biography on Lynyrd Skynyrd and added nothing else. Do you expect other posters to carry on the conversation for you? Did you have any thoughts? Did you learn anything?

And its more difficult to start a thread that will get a lot of downvotes than to start one that will get mostly upvoted so wear it as a badge of honor.

Greatest band of all time... Love me some Skynyrd. Second Helping is the most complete album in the history of music. Every song is a masterpiece.

I'm only 37 but was introduced to them when I was four or five. My dad rocked their music all the time. I've seen them in concert over the course of my life more times than I can count. Their music is timeless and my 7 and 5 year old love it. Ronnie VanZant wasn't 30 years old when he died which is mind blowing. This guy had a lifetime of music recorded at 29 years old. Just imagine what kind of career he would have had if he would have lived.
