Rick Barry: Forgotten forward

Why doesn't Rick Barry get much mention as one of the games great players?
He led the NCAA, the NBA, and the ABA in scoring, won an NBA title, and was regarded as the best passing forward the game had seen until Larry Bird came along.

I remember him doing play by play or whatever back in the day and he was such a dick.

Because he was an a-hole and jumped between ABA and NBA cost him 2 more
MVPs.
But easily a Top 6 SF to ever play.
He also was a great FT shower.

No. 61. He shot 89%.
He made the top 75 list on the 75th anniversary of NBA. Not sure that is being forgotten.

Rick Barry is one of the Top 20 pro players ever.
It’s indisputable.
As already mentioned, he gets overlooked because he jumped to the ABA for purely financial reasons, was loyal to no one but himself, and was considered an a-hole by teammates, coaches, and fans.

He’s known for being a dick by his peers. In fairness, many great legends of the game were that but Barry notably quit against the underdog Suns in the 76 West Finals and squashed their chances to repeat. Plus Barry didn’t appear to be that engaging with his teammates off the court which is what Jordan was despite he was a dick at the same level as Barry was.

In New Orleans in the mid-60s, Loyola basketball was a big thing. Bigger than Tulane in some seasons.
In a 1965 game in Miami, Barry cheapshot a Loyola player named John Erb because Erb was guarding him "too close" on defense. The punch broke Erb's nose and jawbone and sent him to the hospital. No technical foul was called, not even a personal foul. (Game was in Miami).
Barry kinda joked about the incident in his biography.
If a player did the same thing today, it would be all over ESPN and Barry would be charged with assault. His basketball career might have been over.
Instead, he gets away without even a wrist-slap and he goes on to be one of the biggest jerks in basketball history.
