I threw down my fertilizer Saturday evening because we were forecasted to get a shower Sunday... It ended up raining 3 or so inches so hopefully it didn't wash it away.

How often do y’all switch up your mowing pattern? I have my most efficient pattern for time but about every 7th cut I will go in a different direction. Is that not often enough?

So if I wanted to topdress\level a new lawn, would I be better off doing it myself or having a landscaping company do this?

It's a sod lawn that was put down in November and it was done hastily in my opinion..not looking for a golf course finish just trying to smooth it out a little and not kill what's already there ??

TIA

Can anyone help me identify what is happening here?

1) what is this plant called?
2) what is this pink thing that popped up in a week. It's damn near 5' tall already. Is it a part of the plant or some type of weed? It did not do this last spring (planted April 2021)
3) What do I do now?

I go lateral once
Diagonal next
other Diagonal next
repeat

Throw in a vertical every now and then, but I hate it

Those are popular in Texas for low water landscapes. That tall stalk is the “flower?” and that’s normal.

I think they are Red Yuccas but that’s just based on googling similar looking plants. I’ve seen them planted in clusters and they look good similar to Agapanthus.

Any of you baws ever use the manual core aerator tool? I don't have much of a front yard, maybe 1000 sq ft. Would I be a masochist to try to aerate the lawn with a handheld tool?

I do it myself but it’s back breaking work. Wheel barrow, shovel, lawn leveling rake and a drag. Last year I did sandy loam this year mason sand.

I have one for small sections that are compacted. Would never do a whole yard with it. Plugs constantly get stuck in the manual ones and takes time to dislodge. Easier to just rent a aerator and be done with it

Had TruGreen come out Friday to aerate then top dress. They said my pH is around 6, which is good for centipede. The front yard was nearly rock hard so the core aerator was only getting like 1/4” plugs. I watered the front and had them run it again. After 4 days, here are the before and after results after a fresh cut.

For the first few weeks I plan to water about 2” a week including rainfall, and hope to keep cutting 2x a week. Any other tips to help the grass grow? I may aerate the front again in late summer.

ETA: also threw out some centipede seed in the back where I had no grass. Was able to get that down between aerating and top dressing.

Thanks. I noticed them in more flower beds during my walk yesterday. Not sure how I didn’t see them last summer.

I might be looking for someone to top dress a lawn. Will they only do that or is it part of a service plan you sign up for??

I'm sure they would do that, but thats the most expensive part of the process. I'd get them to aerate before just because it's a fraction of the cost to add on.

FYI, he only spread 1/4" of sand on top, he didn't want to put too much to where the grass wouldn't go through. This is definitely much lower than the maximum amount of sand I've heard, but this was a different process than leveling the yard.
