Originally wanted wood burning fireplace in the new build but will end up needing to do a gas log instead. Anyone got any recommendations for a really good gas log fireplace?

Why would you need to go with gas logs?

Home Depot
Got ours a couple of years ago- very pleased with them.

Valor is pretty good. What really comes down to is the quality of the control system you go with. Mertik Maxitrol setups are very solid but can be very expensive if a part fails, the pilot assembly alone can run upwards of $170 with gas valves and controllers running several hundred each. If you plan on installing it yourself I hope you own a good tubing bender...

Where ya located? We’ve bought 2 sets of gas logs from Busch fireplace in Lafayette and have been super impressed. Easy remote start and puts out 36k BTU.

Is it difficult to convert from wood burning to gas insert, once the house is complete?

The chimney vent for a gas log is easier to divert than a wood burning one and the chimney could frick with our upstairs plans if it becomes too intrusive than it already is up there.

I don't know which brands they carry, but Casual Creations on Perkins near Seigen did a great job for us 10+ years ago. The gas logs still look and work great. They install or help DIY.

No idea who should build the fireplace, but you’ll want to buy RH Peterson logs for it.

I researched a few years ago, and those were by far the best recommended. I bought the most expensive set the local fireplace store had.
They stink like hell until you burn them for several hours, so fire them up wide open and get that over with. They look fine, but cheapos that relatives have are actually easier to use and work just as well.

Since this is a new build, i highly recommend a direct vent gas log if the fireplace is located on an outside wall. Read up on it. You can heat the entire house and will not use air inside your home for combustion.

The fireplace will not be on an outside wall in our new build.
