I think Milazzo will do better this year but good SEC pitchers will exploit that footwork of his. I'm still thinking that McManus will unseat him at some point.
If Dugas and Drost have indeed regressed, why would that be? Is it just a slump? Is it mental? Did they change something with their swing? Approach?

Why?
If the offense is clicking, I'd rather have the better catcher in the game.

For those wondering, Mo Hampton is at Samford and went 6-10 this weekend with a HR and 6 RBI.
Samford hit him in the 9-hole all weekend.

I think we have a place for both Milazzo and McManus. McManus is behind Milazzo defensively, but he's not a liability. I know Travinski is just getting healthy, but he looked like a liability behind the plate - he was just flat dropping pitches.
Drost didn't hit well last year. He had a few bright spots. I don't know if he's regressed yet or just stuck in the mud.
Dugas will be fine. He's a streaky hitter. And, he's never afraid to lean into one to get a baserunner. When he's not red hot, he'll give a game here and there to other guys bc we have that kind of quality depth.

LSU finding a catcher that is at least serviceable offensively and defensively is becoming equivalent to the Les Miles QB search. I know catcher is one of the toughest positions on the field, but it’s astonishing how difficult it’s been to find guys who can simply catch the ball and hit above .200. Pap is the last guy who’s been able to do this and he left like 5 years ago.

I personally don’t think we should’ve ever given up on Brock Mathis. Wasn’t good as a freshman but he wasn’t supposed to be. He got forced into duty early and then basically told to look elsewhere when I think he could be a great upperclassman this year

There might be some intangible things, for example, Milazzo allows the pitchers to pitch more freely.
That being said, The bottom line to me is simple math. Milazzo reduces the number of runs scored by the other team. McManus increases the number of runs scored by our team. If McManus increases the number of runs we score by more than the number Milazzo reduces from the other team than McManus gives you the greatest chance to win. Keep in mind Johnson tends to lean offense.
They both will play and it will be situational. I just think you will see more and more McManus when it matters.

Good catchers are hard to get on campus. Neal in next year's class can do both, but he is a high draft risk. Priester could develop into both, but his situation is up in the air for next year.
I wouldn't be surprised if we use the portal next year for a catcher.

That is terrible math

I think we will see improvement from Drost year two vs. year one, especially under Coach Johnson.
Idk, Drost looks like a K machine.

I still feel like other teams don’t struggle to get guys who can catch a ball in flight and at least be better than a PO offensively. Again, it’s like LSU fans begging for a qb who can hit a receiver in stride.

What’s the the Dugas disrespect? Guy almost hit .300 last year and led the team in HRs and RBIs. Y’all are taking Gio and Merrifield over him? I think him and Jobert are neck and neck

He was great last season. Especially late. That hasn't followed over into the spring or fall though. Hopefully his bat wakes back up.

LSU has rarely had a catcher that isn’t at least above average defensively & at least average offensively. So that’s not really true. They always have great catchers.
Milazzo just isn’t good enough to be a catcher at LSU. But they are kind of stuck with him

t's Jay's evaluation, not just mine.
Gio was 3 for 6 with a double and a HR, a walk, and no Ks.
Duggas was 2 for 6 with 2 singles, a K, and no BBs.
Duggas didn't have a "bad" weekend. But on a team this deep, his spot right now is 7th or 8th when he plays. And he will continue to play of course, but guys are right on his heels for time.
Gio has no history to suggest he's going to do better than Dugas. Gio also didn't light it up in the fall and spring, and neither did Thompson, and Thompson continued to not swing it very well this weekend. Then, of course, there is Milazzo. Sorry, I'm not going to question much with Jay Johnson, but there is no way Dugas should be batting any lower than 6th. Merrifield hit the ball well, but he also was just punching singles around, so why should he bat ahead of a guy who we know has power?
I am aware of our depth, and it's great, but there just isn't a legitimate case to be made for Dugas to bat 8th. Clearly, if Gio didn't even start the first two games, Jay doesn't think he's is better than Dugas. Maybe he thinks he's sending some weird message; I don't know. Again, I just thought it was silly. It doesn't matter right now, but going forward, I hope that doesn't continue.

Well, this is all the new coaches know of the players.
Glad you don’t put stock in to it, but they kind of have to
This is the year 2022. There is this great, and brand new invention, called "video". You may have heard of it. They can use that to evaluate players they haven't coached. The guy just had an All-American caliber season. I think that's a little more important than scrimmage results.

Jobert didn't have a good spring at all and we see how that has worked out...

Hampton homered opening weekend for Sanford.

That’s not how tryouts work
