Bead board on studs

I’m thinking of using 3/16 bead board directly on studs in a basement bathroom. Home Depot’s instructions say not to as the panels are too thin without support between studs and panels. They say to use sheet rock behind it. And no nails; use glue. What do you guys think?

Always go with manufacturer instructions. They give them to you for a reason. It would be a shame to install directly on the studs and step back and see a wavy wall of new bead board.

I bet those boards will move a lot with humidity changes in the bathroom

Find some 3/8 beaded plywood

Could shrink and look real obvious with the empty cavity/insulation behind it.

Just for clarity, do you mean beaded boards or simulated beaded board (plywood)?

I think you should spend your money, time and effort and then come back and give us an update.

3/16 is too thin to go directly over studs at 16” oc. What you can do though is stand up 1/4” plywood over the studs and then lay down your beadboard (or vice versa).

Is it rated for bathrooms? If it has a shower in it I would worry about it sagging with humidity
