I can’t understand people who call instead of text message.
If you have important details that I would need to remember, definitely text it. However, if it's something I need to be aware of now or that you want a reaponse from, better follow up with a phone call. My phone only makes noise for a call, every other notification type is silenced. If you only call, and I don't answer, better leave a voicemail or follow up with some other means unless you're someone critical. Those people know who they are.

I just find it rude when someone calls me while I’m in the middle of working on something and expects me to drop my tasks for them. It’s like skipping the line. (I’m in consulting so my whole job is resolving issues/working on things for clients as they come in)
I answer if a coworker calls me because that normally means they need a super quick answer.
Other work calls I let go to VM to see what they need. I can't stand sitting on the phone while I look up what they need.
Family I always answer if I hear it, or call back as soon as I'm not busy.

And then there’s people like my Dad. Who will call, won’t leave a message, and then call right back a second time like it’s an emergency. Only to ask me what time Kentucky is playing on Tuesday.
My mom used to do this to me. Except with LSU.
Like IDK mom, I'm not Google. I have a husband who knows that info so games just turn on at my house.

If people aren't calling you back, maybe their behavior shouldn't be your primary concern.

Why in the world should anyone pay attention to calls unless they've applied for a job?
Unless you answer how would you know why they’re calling? It’s pretty easy to tell when a call is some telemarketer / spam, but otherwise if they’ve got your number one would assume they’re calling you for a good reason. Maybe someone referred you to the caller, they’re calling on behalf of someone, etc. or in your case maybe they just want to know why their order at the drive-thru is taking forever.

I’ve gotten to where when Kentucky posts their upcoming game info I share it to his FB page preemptively.
It’s the calling multiple times in a row like it’s an emergency that drives me crazy. Anyone else, if they call me twice in a row like that, someone is either dying or in the hospital. Or stranded somewhere. Something like that.
And then he’ll sometimes leave a voicemail that sounds urgent. That said, my Dad is an arse that thinks there’s nothing more important than his shite and everyone should drop what they’re doing for him. So to him it is urgent because he’s so self-centered. I just don’t feed into it anymore.

Exactly me. And that's my exact reasoning. Nine times out of ten, something a client needs requires me to actually look into it. I'm not doing that on the phone, especially if I have a bunch of other work in front of me that I was working on.
I have a coworker whose phone rings nonstop with client calls and texts. Even on weekends, nights, early mornings, etc. She set the precedent that she can easily be reached by phone, and they take full advantage. She has numerous standing weekly calls with clients where nothing is actually on the agenda to discuss. I'm not about that life.
We receive a phone stipend from and just use our personal phones for everything, so boundaries are necessary if you want to keep work and personal separate. Especially for me where 90% of my clients are 2 hours behind me.

Yea, my cell phone is my work phone, so I feel you. I had a client text me at 10:30 Thursday night. I ignored her and she promptly text me at 8 Friday morning. Can't wait for her policy to be done and she goes away.
I struggle because I'm Eastern time and everyone else is Pacific and Mountain, so I get a lot of late for me calls. I just ignore them after 7 pm my time, which is end of my "office hours".

A close family member, right away. Acquaintance or business associate, same day if possible. Anybody else doesn't get a return call.

If your number isn’t already in my phone I do not answer it. You can leave a voice mail or send a text.
I don’t answer my phone because you stupid arse old farts keep falling for the Nigerian phone scam bullshite which keeps those assholes in business. So now about 70% of the phone calls I get are phishing attempts. I’ve got better shite to do than to entertain “Bob from de weendoz deparnment”

No matter who’s calling, call back immediately. Great habit to create during your business career.
In my line of work, being the person that calls to discuss mundane information that could have been sent via email is a good way to ensure no one ever picks up the phone when you call.

This, and don’t call a 3hr meeting to discuss things that can be hashed out over email. Most of the time the meeting drags on and ends up just being a meeting to discuss the next meeting. Can’t stand it.

Meetings to discuss prior meetings and set the agenda for a future meeting drive me insane. And probably make up 50% of every call or zoom meeting I’m on.

Without a voice mess or text ....
Never get a return call
I don’t care who it is

Some people are busy and to be continuously disrupted by calls or text can make a long day longer. Sorry Baw, I ain’t calling you back, shite to do.

I return calls from Margot Robbie within 5 minutes.
Everyone else has to wait until I feel like it.

Most of my calls are business related. I try to call, text, or email people back as quick as I can but sometimes I get so buried in work I might take as long as 12-24 hours. If I’m later then that I’ve dropped the ball and accidentally forgot. Personal calls or text from say my kids or wife are usually questions and I can quickly answer those without getting in the way of work.
