Tampa (Fla.) Plant tight end Orson Charles wants to play as soon as possible

It is pretty well known coach Les Miles and his staff are looking for a safety to fulfill this year’s recruiting class.
Another position Miles would like to secure is tight-end. Miles is looking for a tight-end that can block and spread the field.
Orson Charles (6-3, 215, 4.7) fits that description.
“Everything has been going really good,” Charles stated. “We are coming off of a bye-week and have our first district game this week. I’m looking forward to it and I can’t wait to get to practice.
“School has been going great as well,” Charles continued. “I have all A’s and B’s right now with my only B coming in Spanish class. I’m trying to maintain it until I graduate.”
One of the ways Charles is able to stay focused on his team and his studies is by placing the recruiting madness in the back seat for now.
“A bunch of coaches have been calling, but I’ve been busy so I haven’t been able to talk to all of them,” Charles claimed. “Sometimes I just let my mom handle it. She’s doing a good job of letting them know what’s going on with me.
“The one thing about my mom though is she keeps pounding in my head to stay faithful to God,” Charles added. “Without him none of this would be happening. All of this is because of him and so I make sure I continue to pray and go to church.”
Charles is the No. 2 rated tight end in the nation by Rivals.com. ESPN.com has Charles rated No. 14 at his position.
Although, the Plant High School product may not have answered all of the phone calls, he has a good estimate of what coaches have attempted to stay in touch.
“Certain coaches call more than others, but I’d say overall it’s pretty even,” Charles admitted. “I’ve kind of just put recruiting behind somewhat for now. My team has a couple of big games coming up that I’m excited about, but after that then I’m all in (with recruiting).”
One of the coaches Charles managed to speak to reigns from the Bayou State.
“Coach (Earl) Lane called me when I was at the USF game so I kind of missed him,” Charles informed. “But I have spoken to coach Miles.
“He kind of gave me the rundown on how he would use me in LSU’s offense,” Charles added. “He said he’d use me to spread the field. I could see playing time as a freshman if I would come in playing like I know I can. He said I’d be next to Richard (Dickson) on the depth chart and once he leaves that would be my spot.”
The topic of early playing time mentioned by Miles was something that stuck in Charles’ mind.
“In the end that is what I want,” Charles concluded. “I want early playing time. And I don’t want to be just a possession tight-end. I want to be all-around.”

The bolded is kind of what shocked me the most. Are the coaches not very high on Tyler Edwards or what? I realize Joseph and Branch sounds more like blocking TEs than all-purpose receiving TEs and Russian seems to have found himself buried way down the depth chart....but I thought Edwards would take over for Dickson when he graduated after next year? Maybe Edwards will be our replacement FB afterall

I noticed that bolded part as well.
I thought we'd already talked about the prospect of edwards and Branch switchin positions all around didn't we?
Sounds like Charles is higher on us that we thought. SOUNDS like at least.......we'll have to see if he really is or not.

I just hope the coaches aren't BSing him. I'm, sure all coaches do at least a little of it here and there, but usually it seems the LSU coaches are pretty straightforward in telling you whether you can play early or will probably redshirt.

Orsen Charles is on another level athletically than our current TE's not named Richard Dickson. I don't think it's a stretch to say he immediately becomes our next best receiving threat at that possition.
If you have a rivals account watch some footage of him from the Gainesville Nike camp. Dude can run for a TE.

This statement by Miles, leaves alot of play in that quote. If he plays like he knows he can, could be interpreted differently from coach to coach. I say play the best player, he will have to prove that he is the best. Obviously his potential speaks volume and he very well could do just as LM says, but LM never says I guarantee you will start or I gaurantee you will play alot. That depends on how you look when you come in, thats why he always says IF

he's better than Edwards...period
Edwards will be our Zinger/Mit Cole-type.. like Joseph is right now

If he's better than anyone we have, he'll start. Obviously Miles feels he has a great chance to step into the role of Richard Dickson when he leaves. Watch his videos.

I don't understand why people keep listing Orson at 6-3, he's the shortest 6-3 kid I've ever come across.
I just don't know if he's going to translate to TE at the next level. Maybe H-Back but more likely a solid defensive player.

Now that Richard Wilson committed to BYU, is Charles the only TE we are recruiting?

What about the guy that is rethinking his committment to Tennessee?

shite, I grew about 3 more inches during my freshman year of college.
Posted on 10/8/08 at 11:47 am to grif82
Exactly....most men grow an inch or maybe two between the ages of 18-21. He can probably add on 20-30 lbs and end up a 6'5", 235 lb TE that can run and stretch the field. The guy is going to be awesome.

quote:if hes a short 6'3" as mentioned by someone above, seems a bit optimistic to think he'll grow another 2.5 inches.

I agree. Not only that: What do y'all think Crowton told Edwards when he was being recruited...the same thing.
On top of that, what's the problem with having TWO Richard Dickson's after Dickson leaves? Nothing.
Posted on 10/8/08 at 12:43 pm to dstone12
Dickson's little brother is coming up soon as well and he looks to be bigger and better than his big brother.
Posted on 10/8/08 at 12:44 pm to Acreboy
yeah..he's like 6'2 or 3 now but has room to grow def...plays FB, at least as far as i know

Rivals measured him at 6'3 officially at their combine.
