Running Issue

I keep dealing with something annoying when running. Last Summer I went a little too hard, too fast. I was running 3-4 miles 5-6 times a week. Towards the end of summer, I started having a slightly sore left hammy. The pain was not bad but was slightly there with a side of itching (not really but kind of if that makes sense). I decided to stop running for a week and then went to 1 mile runs 2-3 times a week. The problem persisted, so in October I just quit running in general.
I haven't felt anything with my hammy or even thought about it since last October. Welp, I decided to ease back into running this past week. Day 1 was a easy 2 mile run, with two rest days, easy two mile run, rest day, and then easy 3 mile run today. The hammy started feeling slightly sore again on that second 2 mile run.
Has anyone dealt with this before? If it helps, I have been actively working out at the gym 5 days a week for a few years and have played basketball and ran for most of my life.

You doing any kind of stretching or therapy?

Did you continue to do leg workouts while you discontinued running or did you give the leg complete rest?

I would stretch pretty good before my runs. Ever since the injury, I stopped stretching my hamstrings because it would immediately irritate it. To my understanding, when something is injured, especially a muscle, stretching it can affect the healing fibers??

I pretty much gave the legs a complete rest for a month or so and then slowly went back into them with lighter weights than normal.

Quit stretching before you start running. Your stretching something that’s trying to remain tight.

Try massage. Consult the therapist, you may not be able to start with deep tissue. But regular massage can keep you loose and healthy.

I read Scott Jurek’s book and he stretches after he runs. I just can’t bring myself to I try it.

Not sure about the pain part but if there is a burning / itching sensation then could be nerve related.
