I mean, I may just be asking a question where there isn't one and they did mean "personnel," but it just seemed kind of weird.

It’s not weird when you understand the federal civil rights liability that is at stake here. This could cost the town, county, and state a lot of money. So they are saying it’s a “personnel matter” in the hopes no one will call them on it and ask for what should be publicly available personnel records.

In my "long haired freaky people days", there was always a concern about a small town cop planting and finding a bag of weed when he pulled you over for a minor traffic infraction and then playing "Let's make a Deal" so you could get on with your travels. Maybe just me being a bit paranoid at the time, but I'm sure it happened more often than people realized. Damn hippies!

even 50% of that is true, that entire department needs to be shut down.

It would be so delicious if the state found a semi legal set of laws to prosecute and send the entire police department to pound you in the arse prison for ten years

Nothing is going to happen. The people there love the police. Outsiders get hammered.

This is why I wish conservative libertarians would have gotten on board with “defund the police.” They’re a vestigial enemy of the people.

I sympathize with that view, but I've also lived places where I absolutely felt the cops were on my side. I felt that way about JPSO and I think the Dekalb Police are pretty similar.

Seems to be the city police departments that suck. I said that NOPD should have been disbanded after Katrina. They proved themselves to be cowards, thieves, and worse.

In a small town where serious crime is basically non-existent. How tf is it justifiable to have an entire Swat team and an armored truck.

I would say the citizens should be pissed about their tax dollars, but their tax dollars aren't nearly the biggest issue in this situation

The “tax” money used is the bullshite taxation of passers through. The sheriffs have built a little fiefdom and they control everything. The poors in town don’t realize that shite like this means people will avoid their town or keep their head down and get through and wait until till the next slightly better shite hole to stop and get gas or a hotel in.

An example of this was when I used to go up to North La for work. I could either shoot up 59 to shrevegas or head up through Cenla. I made that Cenla trip exactly once and got popped by a shithole town speed trap. I have gone that way exactly zero times since. shite holes like Golden Meadow at least have a lock on the only route. But just like other shitholes, I drove through them as fast as legally possible without stopping and giving their shithole any money.

To be fair, there’s probably a sizable proportion of the town who are complicit in this. In small town operations like this, it is entirely possible that certain neighborhoods are never patrolled and cars known to belong to certain people are never pulled over.

Edit: These lucky locals justify it in their heads in that they pay very little tax to support a 10 man PD, and they are not the ones paying the fines. So they get a PD that most towns of 5,000 - 1,000 would envy but pay very little for it.

The saddest part of all of this may be that it took a damn viral news article spreading nationwide for these frickers to give a shite. This town wasn't some big well-kept secret.

Chief of police quit today

Brookside Police Chief Mike Jones, who spearheaded the change and grew the police department tenfold, at least, calls the town’s policing “a positive story.” Mayor Mike Bryan – a former councilman who assumed his position last year after the death of the previous mayor – sits and nods in agreement.

The mayor was in on it, and benefitted from this thievery. Why is he still employed, and free? Why has nobody burned their houses down, tarred and feathered them, and sent them down the road?
