Frustrating afternoon for me in a sense. When I originally posted at 5:02 pm had several does and young buck harassing them. Over the next 3 or 4 minutes deer just started pouring into the food plot. My heart was pumping and I just had that feeling that one of the bigger deer I’m hunting is going to come out before dark.

That younger but very nice buck I saw this morning eased his way in there at 5:11pm. At 5:13 a mature doe towards the back of the plot just bolts out of the food plot. Never blew, never looked towards me, nothing. Naturally 3/4 the deer in there took off when she did that. I knew they didn’t wind me and was thinking maybe one of the bigger deer I’m hunting is close.

At 5:18 the 8 deer left in the plot stop feeding and look in the same direction. My hearts pounding and im watching that edge the deer were looking and I’ll be damned, half a dozen hogs. Put the biggest hog in my crosshairs and lit her up and fired off a couple more rounds at the next biggest one and ended up hitting that one on my third shot. They were getting it after my first shot. Was surprised I dropped that other.

I wasn’t really frustrated. I said I was going to enjoy myself regardless if I bagged a huge deer or not even see much.

I was more shocked to see those hogs more than anything. They were bad several years ago on our place and they’ll always be around that river unless you’re high fence, but my younger brother had a buddy of his come to our place early summer the last 2 years and they slayed the hogs. Other than seeing one on camera here or there at night, that was the first hogs I saw in the daylight those season and I’ve hunted almost every day since December 16th. My older brother shot 2 in early November and other than that we haven’t seen many. I know their acorns are either gone or spoiled where we’re at in Tensas so I’m sure we’ll start seeing them more frequently to the end of season.

It got a little warmer today than the past several but at least it wasn’t like the week after Christmas today. I really enjoyed today. I needed that all day sit to completely unwind and unplug. My dad passed in 2012 and thought a lot about him today. Even “talked” to him a little. Very good memories. God’s been good to my family and I
