That bonus requires an 8-year commitment and is taxable. Just as it was when I was in recruiting 14 years ago.

Vaccine mandate may be a part of it, but people see the propaganda going in in the military. They've been pandering to a small percentage of the US population that typically doesn't join the military. Who could have seen this coming?

THIS. I went from believing the military was a good path for my sons to believing there is no way in Hell I’ll put my sons’ lives in the hands of incompetent woke leaders who think nothing of their lives. Join a militia if you want to serve your country.

Actually, if one was wanting a sex change, they could join, get the bonus then the sex change on the government taxpayer dime. Maybe they could then develop PTSD from someone yelling at them and get discharged with service connected benefits.

No, if you leave before your obligation you owe back the remaining bonus.
This is the same for those who use post-911 GI Bill benefits and leave before the additional 3 years or someone who tries to get out right after being promoted or after a PCS move. You have to closely read any obligations you entail.

Out of curiosity, how does it work when the army website says "up to $400,000 bonus" for jobs like surgeon and anesthesiologist?

Exactly what it says. Based upon your medical specialty, they will break the bank to try to hire you away from the private sector. That applies to medical professionals though.
